Phillip Island WSBK Test Photos

There may only have been four riders at the Phillip Island World Superbike test - Max Biaggi and Leon Camier of the Aprilia team, and Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri of Yamaha - but that was reason enough for our good friend Andrew Gosling of TBG Sport to go shoot a few snaps. As always, it was well worth the effort. Enjoy!

It's summer in Australia. This is what summer looks like in Phillip Island

Max Biaggi will be running the #1 plate on the bike and #3 on his helmet. Hope he's not overly superstitious

GP Commission: FP3 Reinstated, GPS Banned in MotoGP, Traction Control Allowed In Moto3

There's good news and bad news for the opponents of electronics in motorcycle racing from today's meeting of the Grand Prix Commission, held in Madrid in Spain. MotoGP's rule-making body met to discuss changes to the regulations for the 2011 and 2012 seasons, and electronics was one of the subjects under discussion.

But the first order of business was to rearrange practice. The changes made in the cost-cutting frenzy between the 2008 and 2009 seasons have finally been scrapped once again, and the four-practice schedule used by MotoGP for so many years before makes a welcome return. The schedule had been partially reinstated at the end of the 2010 season, with four sessions of 45 minutes replacing the three one-hour sessions which had been used for the past two seasons. Though the reception was overwhelmingly positive, the one complaint that riders had being that the 45 minute sessions left little time to make changes during the session.

That problem has now been solved, as the GP Commission has agreed to return to four one-hour sessions for the MotoGP class from 2011. The Moto2 class will see four sessions of 45 minutes on each race weekend, while the 125cc class will have two sessions of 45 minutes on Friday and Saturday morning, and two sessions of half an hour in the afternoons.

Jonathan Rea To Test Honda MotoGP Bike In Malaysia

During the winter test ban, MotoGP's equivalent of the dog days of summer, the social media website Twitter has turned into a goldmine for journalists, from both the traditional and the new media alike. With so many high-profile riders, managers, mechanics and other members of the paddock active on Twitter, nuggets useful for filling empty column inches keep popping up almost by magic.

Phillip Island WSBK Test Day 2: Biaggi Fastest Again

The weather finally turned halfway decent for a test, with the sun out and temperatures rising for the World Superbike test at Phillip Island in Australia. The improved conditions saw Max Biaggi once again top the - admittedly very limited - timesheets with a lap of 1'32.3, but 2010 World Superbike champion - out on an Aprilia bearing the #1 plate - was only a couple of tenths faster than both Yamaha's Eugene Laverty and Biaggi's Aprilia teammate Leon Camier. Slowest man of the day was Laverty's teammate Marco Melandri, but even Melandri was just three tenths off Biaggi's fastest .

Biaggi and Camier spent the day testing the 2011 Ohlins forks once again, as well as a new swingarm, fuel tank and engine update, aimed at smoothing power delivery. The pair also tested new Pirellis, though whether those tires will be ready for the season opener on February 27th remains to be seen.

The day was spoiled by a couple of crashes, both happily ending without serious injury. Marco Melandri crashed and hurt a finger, though that did not slow him down, while Leon Camier came away from his crash unhurt, only to suffer a bird strike, the Englishman hitting one of Phillip Island's ubiquitous seagulls at high speed. That incident was painful enough for Camier to call an early halt to the test, after Camier suffered swelling in his arm

Hyundai will debut Sonata Hybrid ads at Sun Bowl

The Hyundai Sonata is already popular with automotive diehards, making the 2011 Car of the Year short list and taking the top spot in the informal Autoblog poll. Now, the question arises as to how Hyundai will introduce the slightly delayed, $25,795* hybrid version to the world? The answer is through ads that will be broadcast first during the upcoming Sun Bowl on December 31. The eco-friendly hybrid, which gets 35/40 miles per gallon, city/highway, will go on sale this January and is Hyundai's first hybrid vehicle.

The first ad, called "Anachronistic City," tries to make the best of Hyundai's late-on-the-scene hybrid entry, suggesting that it's quite common to improve from the first generation of an innovative product. Take that, Prius and Insight. Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO, John Krafcik, said in a statement that: "The spot makes a point about how all technology evolves. Hybrid Sonata capitalizes on the learnings of hybrid models that have come before it, and advances the technology so that it's practical and affordable for a broader consumer audience - not just early adopters." The campaign of eight ads was created by Innocean Worldwide Americas.

BMW G450X vs. bobsled
BMW G450X plays chicken with a bobsled - Click above to watch the video after the break

Chicken - it may be the single most mindless game involving high-octane motor vehicles and low-IQ human beings. But the video you are about to see isn't exactly a game of chicken in the classic sense. You see, one one hand there is a bobsled, which is indeed piloted by humans but is actually powered by gravity.

On the other end of the icy, winding chute is BMW-mounted stuntman Chris Pfeiffer, who's riding one of the German marque's G450X off-road motorcycles. At a predetermined point of the track, Pfeiffer and the bobsled team will cross paths, one going high and the other going low. Dangerous? You betcha.

But it's also just about as cool as a staged game of chicken between a motorcycle and a bobsled can be. We suggest you see for yourself after the break. And don't try this at home.

Nissan: "Everyone in their Leaf" by end of summer

2011 Nissan Leaf - Click above for high-res image gallery

Buried within an article found in the San Jose Mercury News is a tidbit of information that might help clarify Nissan's delivery plans for its all-electric Leaf. The news story mostly talks about Olivier Chalouhi, the first non-celebrity to take delivery of the automaker's electric hatch, but Nissan spokesman Tim Gallagher also reveals that the Leaf's widespread roll out will kick off soon, telling the Mercury News: "By the end of summer, our goal is to have everyone in their car."

Gallagher's word implies that Nissan intends to fill all 20,000 U.S. orders placed for its electric hatch by the end of summer 2011. If this is true, then we expect Nissan to shift into high gear and start delivering, oh, a thousand or so Leafs per week before too long. As we've reported before, there can sometimes be a discrepancy between the words of the automaker and those of customers awaiting delivery of their Leaf, but Gallagher's words make us think those times might be over.

HRC Press Release After Johnny Rea's Sepang MotoGP Test

Below is the press release issued by HRC after the private test of the Honda test team, where Ten Kate Honda World Superbike rider Johnny Rea was allowed to test Honda's RC212V MotoGP bike. No times were released:

HRC MOTOGP TEST AT SEPANG ENDS 2010 ON TRACK DEVELOPMENT WORK

The HRC MotoGP test team brought curtain down on the 2010 season on-track when they wrapped up the three-day test at Sepang Malaysia today. The test session was scheduled to end yesterday but was extended to include a three-hour session this morning due to time last to heavy rain yesterday afternoon.

The test team and HRC test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi were happy with the data gleaned while verifying information and technical data gathered at the last team test session, held at Valencia in early November.

The HRC test was also a happy experience for Ten Kate Honda World Superbike team rider Jonathan Rea. The Ulsterman was given the opportunity to test the RC212V as a reward for his WSB performances in 2010. Race completed the test alongside Akiyoshi running for 40 laps in fine sunny weather with temperatures close on 30 degrees for the morning session.
