MIT finds another reason to charge your car at night: reduced pollution
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, USA

If you own or plan on purchasing an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid (PHEV), you may be weighing the pros and cons of Time-of-Use metering (assuming that's an option). Will your electricity bill go down? Is it worth leaving your vehicle partially charged so that you can take advantage of the cheaper rates at night? Having a drained pack sitting in your garage could mean not making that impromptu dinner with friends. To help sway your decision, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Texas have given us a moral reason to charge at night: less pollution. Dr. Tammy Thompson, the lead author from MIT, said:
The results in general show positive air quality results due to the use of PHEVs regardless of charging scenario with the nighttime charging scenario showing the best results on average by a small margin. This further supports efforts to develop regulation to encourage nighttime charging; an example would be variable electricity pricing.
In particular, less ozone is emitted during nighttime charging. Ozone is the product of a chemical reaction between hydrocarbons & nitrogen oxides (both pollutants emitted by vehicles and electricity-generating power plants) and sunlight. As there is no sunlight at night (we did our research on this point), the chemical reaction that produces ozone cannot occur and the pollutants emitted will have dispersed by the time the sun rises. It is worth noting, though, that this schedule does produce the most nitrogen oxides. However, night charging will also help balance electricity demand meaning, in the long run, less power plants - and that's something that we can all agree is a good thing.

Chevy Volt hate comes on strong, but Bob Lutz strikes back hard
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet

Is there any car out there that draws more political fire than the Chevy Volt? Sure, people rag on the Nissan Leaf for its limited range and on a bunch of cars - the Murano CrossCabriolet, the Acura ZDX, the Juke - for their styling, but the Volt really seems to have a special ability to get people's claws out. It's almost like they've forgotten all about the Toyota Prius. The main issues are the alternative powertrain and the political effects of the feds bailing out General Motors and issuing plug-in vehicle rebates.
Take, for example, a recent article on Red State titled, "The Chevy Volt: designed for Democratic bureaucrats." Writer Moe Lane attacks the car for being "a glorified hybrid," saying that "the effective gas mileage is somewhere around 27 mpg." That's almost a reasonable argument, especially when compared to some of the vitriol directed at the Volt from people like Rush Limbaugh. Whatever the politicians say, at least one retired member of the U.S. Navy, Vice Admiral Dennis McGinn, is willing to go out on a limb and say: "'Clean' Cars are Patriotic." Still, over on Hot Air, the reasoning goes:
Enter our old friend Bob Lutz, who has a new book coming out on June 9. Titled "Car Guys vs Bean Counters: The Battle for the Soul of American Business," the book "puts the Volt birthers and their tinfoil-hat-wearing fellow travelers in their place," writes Motor Trend. MT also quotes Lutz as writing:Feel like buying a Chevy Volt? Probably not, thanks to the steep price tag; the car retails north of $40,000, a high price for a subcompact four-seater. What you may not know is that you're already buying Volts, thanks to [the $7,500] tax credit.
Apparently, Lutz doesn't spare those on the left of the political spectrum, but he's really peeved at the right-wing bloviators: "To all the doubters, opponents, critics and skeptics... [including] Glenn Beck, I say: 'Eat your hearts out. Volt is the future'."Animosity towards the Obama administration is so intense among the right-wing talk-show hosts that any vulnerability, however tenuous, must be attacked and blamed on 'socialist influence', with no regard to truth or to the damage these reckless claims can make to GM, an American corporation, to the dedicated and hard-driving members of the Volt team, and to a now-misinformed public that may be steered away from a transportation solution that would fill their needs perfectly.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 takes to the track
Filed under: Coupe, Videos, Porsche

The 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 certainly has the stats of a kick-ass track car. Who can argue with a naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter flat-six with 500 horsepower, an 8,250 rpm redline and a Nürburgring time of 7:27? Just as exciting is the fact that the GT3 RS 4.0 weighs only 2,998 pounds soaking wet, thanks to a host of weight-saving measures like light-weight carpet and scads of carbon fiber. And when was the last time you saw a street-legal production car with front dive plates for added down-force?
You know what else we like? Video of the GT3 RS 4.0 on the track. After the jump is video of the 997 911's final iteration tearing up the Porsche development test track in Germany. While you're watching, you can also learn more about the 4.0 from Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger. It's too bad that we're only $184,948 short of the GT3 RS 4.0's starting price of $185k, because we'd sure like to be one of the 600 owners to have this 911 in our long-term garage. Hit the jump to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Natural gas may burn clean in a car, but it still has serious problems to investigate
Filed under: Natural Gas

Our readers are passionate about what type of energy will power the world's vehicles in the future. You have your electric car camp, your hydrogen camp, the gasoline traditionalists and also natural gas supporters like T. Boone Pickens, who believes the U.S. sits atop so much natural gas by divine intervention. Depending on what camp you presently reside in, two new studies on natural gas emissions may fuel your passion or weaken your resolve.
The first report (courtesy of ProPublica) states that analysis done by the Environmental Protection Agency shows much higher methane emissions during extraction of natural gas than previously thought. For instance, during hydraulic fracturing of shale gas, methane levels are thought to be 9,000 times higher than before. These new numbers mean some gas-fired power plants are only about 25 percent cleaner than coal instead of the 50 percent that most natural gas supporters assert.
The second study, by Cornell professor Robert Howarth, takes a look at the global warming contribution of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. He determined that this method of natural gas extraction has a larger footprint than even gas or coal over a 20-year time frame.
With such a large part of the emissions coming from the extraction and processing of natural gas, it's of little surprise that many are taking a not in my backyard stance, such as Erica Fernandez a young girl who helped block a liquefied natural gas facility and pipeline from being built in her neighborhood.

Amarok P1 to use light weight as a weapon in TTXGP Formula 75
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, Racing

Admittedly, the tag "Born of Twin Otters" has less of a ring to it than Saab's "Born of Jets" slogan, but in the case of the Amarok P1 from Michael Uhlarik's Amarok Consultants, it is much more fitting. The Canadian designer decided to build a better electric road racer using some of the same concepts and techniques employed by those winged workhorses of the North with the resulting motorcycle exemplifying the use of light weight as a weapon.
Working from paper drawings, the P1 was hand built in an ancient coach house in Quebec using an aluminum monocoque that functions as frame, battery box and exterior skin. The finished machine pushes the scales to 325 lbs (147 kg) while packing 7.5 kWhs (killowatt hours) worth of lithium-based battery and a pair of Agni 95R DC motors.
The electro cycle will attempt to prove its racing worth this season in the Formula 75 class of the upcoming TTXGP. Regardless of how it does, Uhlarik is already at work on its replacement; the P2, which has a target weight of 275 lbs (125 kg). The overarching goal is to achieve power-to-weight parity with gas-powered 250cc Grand Prix bikes.
While officially known as the P1, this bike also sports "Sudbury Saturday Night" on its id tag and it's this ditty, performed by its iconic Canadian composer Stompin' Tom Conners, that waits to accompany your reading of the official press release after the break.

Pioneer developing iPhone-like multitouch head-unit
Filed under: Aftermarket, Technology

Our compatriots over at CrunchGear got themselves an impressive little exclusive in the form of the Pioneer AppRadio. The aftermarket double-din head-unit (model number SPH-DA01) is an iPhone or iPod Touch user's automotive dream, complete with a 6.1-inch capacitive multitouch screen, home button, USB ports, S-Video and RCA jacks, along with a 30-pin Apple-spec dock to mount your iDevice.
According to CrunchGear's sources, the AppRadio is designed to interface exclusively with iOS 4.1 devices (meaning Android and Windows Phone 7 users are left out in the cold) and runs a UI that's remarkably similar to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (we'll see how Apple's lawyers take to that). Pioneer is developing apps for the head-unit, including Pandora and iHeartRadio, while the standard Bluetooth connectivity, AM/FM stereo, MicroSD slot and GPS functionality are also part of the package.
There's no word on price or availability yet, and since the specs don't include a modem, the AppRadio will pull data from your iPhone. We'd expect an official announcement before the end of the year and should see the hardware in person at the next CES.

Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf earn Top Safety Picks in first IIHS electric vehicle crash tests
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, Nissan

Volvo may be working to make sure its C30 Electric offers a completely safe ride when it arrives later this year, but both Chevrolet and Nissan can already say they have earned the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In IIHS' first mainstream plug-in vehicle tests - which are done the same way as tests for vehicles with standard powertrains - both the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Nissan Leaf have were named "Good" for their front, side, rear, and rollover crash protection. IIHS said in a statement that, "The milestone demonstrates that automakers are using the same safety engineering in new electric cars as they do in gasoline-powered vehicles." Who's surprised about that?
The two plug-in pioneers also won the Top Safety Pick title, thanks to standard electronic stability control. So far in 2011, IIHS has named 80 cars as Top Safety Picks, so it's not like this is a refined category. The 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Honda Insight were named Top Safety Picks in late 2009. That said, IIHS has taken issue with some plug-in electric vehicles in the past, mostly the not-quite-a-car NEVs, especially small vehicles like the Gem e2 or the Wheego Whip. Read all of the IIHS' words on the subject in the press release after the jump.

Ireland finalizes plug-in vehicle incentive scheme; Nissan Leaf buyers rejoice
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Europe/EU

Consider it done. Nissan Leaf buyers in Ireland can finally take delivery of their electric hatchbacks now that the sovereign state's plug-in vehicle incentive program has been finalized. All vehicles with CO2 emissions under 75 grams per kilometer are eligible for a purchase subsidy of up to €5,000 ($7,256 U.S. at the current exchange rate), but with Ireland committing to a mere €5 million ($7.26 million U.S.) budget, only the first 1,000 or so vehicles sold will be eligible for the subsidy.
In early April, Paul O'Sullivan, marketing director for Nissan Ireland, said that Irish buyers had placed 400 orders for the Leaf and 58 of the electric hatchbacks had arrived from Japan. However, Nissan Ireland was unwilling to release the 58 vehicles until the state's plug-in incentive scheme was in place. With the grant program receiving final approval, the Leafs should roll out to Irish customers soon. The Leaf's MSRP in Ireland is €34,995 ($50,781 U.S.), but the purchase subsidy effectively cuts its price down to €29,995 ($43,526 U.S.). Hat tip to Guillaume!
