Warthog in Forza 4

We're convinced that Forza Motorsport is out to take over the universe. With the racing simulator's only real competitor, Gran Turismo, sucking wind, the title is kicking in teeth and taking what it wants. An example, you ask? Not only will Forza 4 feature the M12 FAV Warthog from Halo, the combat vehicle will receive an introduction from none other than Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame. How's that for a few of your favorite worlds colliding? Word has it that the Warthog isn't the only vehicle that will receive the Jezza treatment, as the game's Autovista mode will introduce players to a wide variety of new metal.

Clarkson approaches the imaginary attack vehicle with his typical sarcasm and snark, which results in the kind of hilarity that we've come to know and love from the portly presenter and columnist. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself, and cruise on over to the Forza site for more information on Forza 4.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Driving Footage [Video]

When Porsche revealed the new generation of 911 sportscar, we expected a media onslaught on the video front - after all, Toyota made more videos of the Camry than we'd ever want to watch. Yet all we got was a teaser announcing the arrival of the Carrera and a video of the car drifting in the Arctic but fully camouflaged, much like what Ferrari did with the FF.

All that changed today with the arrival of the first preview of what your brand new 911 Carrera S looks like going down the road. Yet ...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

A GTI For The Masses

2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

We've given Volkswagen a fair amount of flack for the 2011 Jetta - and justifiably so. All the things we held dear in previous generations - high-end materials, solid driving dynamics and that general sense of premium the Germans do so well - were all nixed in the name of market share.

But as we suspected, it's working. Jetta sales in the U.S. are up 74 percent over last year as consumers view the redesigned, cut-priced sedan as an upmarket contender to the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cruze. And honestly, more power to them.

What we've really been waiting for is this, the 2012 Jetta GLI. Packing VW's ubiquitous turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a six-speed manual or optional DSG and an independent rear suspension, the GLI is here to assuage enthusiasts' fears that VW has lost the plot in its relentless pursuit of global market dominance. Just as Porsche hasn't given up on sports cars as it expands into un-Porsche-like segments, neither has VW in its efforts to appeal to more people. But unlike Ferdinand's second child, we still have the nagging sense that Volkswagen is leaving something on the table - despite the GLI's potential on paper.

Europcar adds Peugeot iOn to rental vehicle fleet

2011 Peugeot iOn

Last March, rental agency Europcar pre-ordered 500 electric vehicles from Renault to add to its fleets in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In July 2011, Europcar was back at it, adding an undisclosed amount of the "go anywhere at any time" Opel Amperas to its fleet. Now, Europcar will add electric Peugeot iOns to its fleet.

Europcar says the Peugeot iOns will initially only be available for rentals of 24 hours or less, a move that Europcar says will ensure the vehicles don't often run out of juice. Additionally, the iOns will only be available at Europcar locations set up to recharge plug-in vehicles - Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports, Kings Cross and at Marble Arch.

Now, here's something we'd like to see transfer to the U.S.: Europcar says specific CO2 emissions data is available on all vehicles in its rental fleet and it will only label the greenest of autos "eco-friendly."

Novitec Gives Alfa Romeo Giulietta Some Extra Juice

It's the height of summer and if you don't drink your juice, you might end up looking anemic and week in front of the competition. That's also true for cars, and one hatch that's looking a bit anemic is the elegant Alfa Romeo Giulietta that's as beautiful as an Italian supermodel but is lacking a bit of muscle on its bone.

Thus German tuners Novitec have given it a diet of body kits and ECU remaps. And the results show, as the little Giulietta looks a lot more aggressive and ready to take on ...

Nissan accelerates Leaf availibility in Chicago to launch this fall

2011 Nissan Leaf

On Thursday, Nissan America officials joined Governor Pat Quinn and the city of Chicago in announcing an accelerated Illinois rollout of the Leaf for this fall. Why the hurry up? Well, because the state of Illinois is ready, Leaf-ready.

Back in February, Governor Quinn announced an investment of $1 million to install a "state-of-the-art" charging infrastructure for electric vehicles throughout the Chicagoland area, matching $1 million in Clean Cities grants. When all is said and done, the project will result in a network of 280 charging stations. Additionally, Illinois offers up to $4,000 in rebates for the purchase of electric and alternative technology vehicles - making the Leaf even more affordable to the state's estimated 12.9 million residents.

Working with 350Green, the city of Chicago has spearheaded an aggressive infrastructure rollout that calls for 73 DC quick-charge stations and 207 Level 2 units to be installed at public locations by the end of 2011. Thus far, only 40 of those stations are operational but, when complete, the Chicagoland area will be able to brag about having the U.S.' most extensive plug-in vehicle infrastructure. Perhaps other states, ones that aren't nearly as Leaf-ready, should pay attention to how Nissan responds to an area's level of plug-in readiness. Just as Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, promised in 2010, when he said, "Consumer feedback and market readiness have been key drivers in developing our phased rollout."

How the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid differs from its predecessor

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid video

Reborn for 2012, the Camry Hybrid utilizes a heavily revised version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive that is coupled to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and returns fuel economy ratings of 43/39/41 (city/highway/combined), a sure-to-be-noticed improvement over the 2011 gas-electric Camry's rating of 31 miles per gallon city and 35 mpg highway. Aside from that, the 2012 Camry Hybrid puts out 200 horsepower (versus 187 hp for last year's gas-electric Camry) and gets a price cut of $1,000, give or take.

Is there anything else that sets the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid apart from its predecessor? Sure. The 2012 version features several minute modifications that the casual observer might not even notice. For example, the 2012 Camry Hybrid has more space in the boot for your golf clubs and the 2.5-liter gasser features modified intake and exhaust manifolds that allow the engine to breathe a bit better.

Lucky for us there are individuals like Joseph Telmo, senior administrator of Toyota Motor Sales, who can detail all the revisions that distinguish the 2012 Camry Hybrid from last year's gas-electric Camry. So, hit the jump to listen to Toyota's Telmo talk up the changes that he says make the 2012 hybrid superior to its predecessor.

Virent biofuel works like gasoline, causes "no harm" to vehicles

Virent BioForming process

Virent Energy Systems has taken a major step in the certification process of its biofuel. Virent's much-like-gas biofuel successfully completed road tests organized and executed by Virent's collaborator, Shell. The tests found Virent's biofuel caused "no harm" to vehicles when compared to Shell's pump gas.

For testing purposes, Shell used five identical pairs of late-model European vehicles. Five of the vehicles were fueled with Shell gas, and the other five burned an undisclosed blend of gas and Virent's biofuel. Each vehicle was then driven 6,000 miles, after which the engines were dismantled and inspected. All ten automobiles, regardless of fuel used, were found to be in the same condition.

This road trial is one of several necessary steps in Virent's journey towards fuel certification. At the end of its three-year-long project, Virent, using its proprietary near-zero-outside energy BioForming process, expects to deliver a fuel that can replace gasoline.

For $995, 2012 Ford Explorer gets EcoBoost treatment for 28 mpg; Edge gets 30 mpg

2011 Ford Explorer

For 2012, Ford will bolster its EcoBoost commitment by equipping both the Explorer and the Edge with its turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This pint-sized mill boosts the Explorer's fuel economy rating to "segment-leading" status and pushes the Edge to the 30-mpg mark.

The 2012 EcoBoost-equipped Explorer arrives toting some fairly impressive fuel economy numbers - 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg out on the highway. Ford points out that those EPA figures mean that the 240-horsepower Explorer gets a best-in-class highway fuel economy rating. For comparison's sake, the V6 Explorer, though slightly more powerful (283 hp), gets stickered with lower fuel economy figures of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Similarly, the 2012 Ford Edge, equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, officially returns 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The EcoBoost engine bumps up the Edge's fuel economy by three miles per gallon on the highway compared to the 3.5-liter V6-equipped 2011 Edge. For 2012, the EcoBoost engine is available on front-wheel-drive Explorer and Edge models for an extra $995. That should be an appealing price for a lot of buyers. As Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager, told Automotive News, "36 percent of customers are purchasing Explorer because of fuel economy. It was only 6 percent back in 2007."

Banking on EcoBoost is Ford's commitment. Looking forward, the automaker says EcoBoost engines will be available in 90 percent of its vehicles by the end of 2013.

Elon Musk bets Dan Neil $1 million he can get Tesla Model S out on time

Can a million dollars hold Elon Musks' feet to the fire? That's the value of a bet that Wall Street Journal auto journalist and all-around interesting guy Dan Neil and the Tesla Motors CEO reportedly have going over the release of the upcoming Model S.

According to Green Car Reports, the bet hinges on Neil's 2009 comment that the Model S is "ambitious" and that Musk's promised delivery date of late 2012 was, "an audacious timeline that makes many in the car industry roll their eyes." Musk, also a bit of a boisterous one, apparently emailed Neil in 2009 to say: You wanna bet? The exact emails have apparently been lost, but GCR says the details, according to Neil, are as follows. For Musk to win, the Model S:
  • Needs to start series production and be delivered to the first paying customers by the end of 2012.
  • Have to be certified by NHTSA with a four- or five-star safety rating and it has to have seven seats.
  • Needs to be priced at $57,400 (for the base model with the 160-mile range), $67,400 (230 miles) and $87,400 (300 miles).
These are all targets that Tesla itself announced, so Neil is simply asking the company to follow through on its promises. There is one final sticking point, and for this we'll quote GCR directly:

[The Model S] has to have a battery pack that allows en-route swapping at a highway roadside station, similar to the Better Place battery swapping scheme.

We hope, for Musk's sake, that someone got their wires crossed here. As far as we know, the Model S was never supposed to have Better Place-style batter swap capability. Instead, the plan has always been, "When [Model S drivers] take an occasional two-way long distance trip, they'll get a replacement pack and then pick up their original one on the way back," with the swaps done at Tesla dealerships.

We have to assume Musk would like this clarified, too, since Neil claims that Musk will have to donate a million dollars to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) if Tesla doesn't hit these targets. If Neil loses, he's willing to donate a more modest, journalist-level $1,000 to MSF. Which side of the bet would you rather be on?
