Video: Consumer Reports Top Pickup for 2012 is... the Chevrolet Avalanche?!

Four Wheeler magazine named the Ram Power Wagon its 2012 Pickup Truck of the Year, and it's an award that celebrates features we associate with so-called "serious" pickups, like a two-speed transfer case, trail performance and vinyl flooring. But what if you want a Pickup Truck of the Year that's got a little less pickup in it? Consumer Reports holds your answer, as it chose the Chevrolet Avalanche as the 2012 Top Pick Pickup Truck.

Why? Because of, as far as we can tell, its versatility and the ways it feels more like a Chevrolet Suburban than a Power Wagon: interior, fire-and-forget four-wheel drive, decent acceleration and comfy ride. Or, put another way, because even though it's not a Chevrolet Suburban it can do almost everything a Suburban can do as well as hold a kayak. But you can't see out the back, because there's a bed there. Follow the jump for the CR video report.

BMW M135i with xDrive?

At next week's Geneva Motor Show, BMW will be showing this, the Concept M135i, a sporty version of the recently launched 1-Series, this time coming as a three-door model with a chassis setup created by the gurus of M-division. Autoblog recently wrote that even though BMW has not announced it yet, the M135i will go into production.

Now, we thought that when the Bavarians said the car was BMW's concept study of a further model from this new product category will be showcased on the media days, ...

Translogic drives a poo-powered car

Bio Bug

Translogic has driven a lot of interesting vehicles over the past two years. Our sister site filmed some of the first seat time in a Chevrolet Volt, drove Local Motors' Rally Fighter, got behind the wheel of an electric DeLorean, turned in the first test drive of the Lightning GT supercar, tried out the YikeBike, and even found a wacky wood-powered car called the "Beaver." You'd think there wouldn't be anything more outrageous for those guys to find seat time in. Yet they've managed to find yet another crazy transportation project with an alternative power source to top them all: human waste.

While we've written about Geneco's Bio Bug before, this episode of Translogic features an actual road test, filmed onsite at the Wessex Water waste treatment plant in England. The plant produces biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide gas that's used to power this Volkswagen New Beetle. The conversion sounds pretty straightforward, and is similar to adapting a gasoline engine to run on propane.

Click past the jump to see the full episode.

Spyshots: 2013 Volkswagen Golf

Volkswagen is ready to bring out the seventh generation of their most potent market tool, the Golf. The new C-class contender will be based on the MQB modular platform and will be a bit longer and wider than before.

The new platform will be some 100 lbs (50 kg) lighter than before. Under the bonnet will be a generation of more efficient engines in both direct-injected petrol (TSI) and diesel (TDI) forms. The most talked about engine is the .4-litet with cylinder deactivation, but the future c...

Toyota Yaris Hybrid: Amazing Economy and Low Emissions

Did you know that Toyota has the Auris Hybrid in Europe? We did, but we don't really like it very much, and neither do the customers. This, however, is a totally different story. It's called the Yaris Hybrid, and we think it will be a big hit because it uses a completely new car and the look is not gimmicky like the big Prius.

Today, Toyota UK gave us an insight into just how good the car might be, as the say it will only put out 79 g/km of CO2, while doing 80.7 mpg on the British cycle. And ...

Interest in Toyota, GM compacts, hybrids jumps in January

Toyota and General Motors were among automakers whose compact cars and hybrids received a jump in shopper interest last month as gas prices approached $3.40 a gallon, according to the New Car Insights Report on AutoTrader.com.

Four Toyotas - the Prius and Prius V hybrids and Corolla and Yaris compacts - were among the 20 models that were subject to the largest increase in customer interest between December and January, according to the report. Shopping interest in GMs Buick Verano compact sedan almost doubled in January, marking the largest jump, while Chevrolet's Sonic and Cruze compact models also made the top 20. The Subaru Impreza also had a surge in consumer interest last month.

Overall, the number of people shopping for compacts rose 1.1 percentage points while full-size trucks had a 1.7 percentage-point drop in consumer interest. Shoppers may be gearing up for the heavier spring and summer driving seasons - and the resulting gas-price increases - by looking at more fuel-efficient cars.

U.S. fuel prices rose almost 20 cents a gallon last month to about $3.53 a gallon, and are up about 12 percent in the past year, according to AAA. Last year, refueling costs accounted for 8.4 percent of an average family's annual income, the highest number in 30 years.

Ford: 1.0-liter Three-Cylinder Ecoboost Engine Could Produce 180 HP

Downsizing is a process that's taking over the automotive industry and there are certain carmakers that aim to take development to the stratospheric phase, with Ford being one of them.

Gunnar Herrmann, vehicle line director for the Focus, recently told autocar that the engine, which will develop up to 125 hp in its normal version, could be taken up to 180 hp. It's a stretch, but possible, the exectuive said.

The aforementioned source mentions that Ford is expected to release a high perform...

Spy Shots: 2013 SRT Viper is starting to vent

2013 SRT Viper spy shots

There seems to be an endless stream of spy shots scrolling across out digital desktops here at Autoblog, and some will invariably be more interesting than others. But few are as hotly anticipated as the new Viper that's coming roaring around the corner.

So far, all Chrysler has given us is a shadowy sketch, a close-up detail shot, and the new badge that will represent the model, joining the test mule spy shots we've been seeing for the past several months and the Hot Wheels leak we brought you yesterday. But this latest batch of spy shots appears the clearest yet - despite the best efforts of the SRT development team (including a Dukes of Hazzard-style hood slide that compelled KGP Photography to do a quick bit of wry image manipulation).

2013 SRT Viper interior spy shotsSo what can we see from these pics? Ventilation, and lots of it. There is a pair of massive hood vents that pass air through the grille over the hood like you'd expect to see on a Le Mans race car. And through the mesh on Dolly Parton-size hood bra you can see a pair of uprights in the grille forming a V shape that's a slight departure from the crosshair grille of the previous Vipers. (Remember, this is technically an SRT product and - like the Ram trucks - no longer a Dodge.)

We're also seeing the clearest shots yet of the interior, with what looks like a full digital dashboard (complete with 220 mph speedo) instead of analog instruments. With each passing day, we hope to see a little more, but for now you can check out the full batch of spy shots in the gallery for a closer look.

Report: Hertz urges government to oversee rental car recalls

Hertz

In the rental car industry, if a vehicle is on the lot it isn't making any money. The same is true for any vehicle in the shop for repairs, including vehicles that are recalled by automakers. That has created a bit of a conundrum for rental car companies, and the drive for profits can lead to vehicles getting rented that should be getting repaired.

The Detroit Bureau reports that Hertz is trying to change that. In fact, Hertz has taken the drastic step of asking the government to enact new regulations to place a priority on getting recalled vehicles repaired as soon as possible. Hertz has had to take this step because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration currently has no authority over the industry. NHTSA has been watching the rental car companies from afar since a 2010 accident that occurred as a result of a vehicle defect that didn't get repaired because of rental demand.

The Hertz pitch may just work, as a pair of high-ranking legislatures will reportedly introduce legislation to regulate the rental car industry. It makes sense that Hertz is looking to level the playing field, since the rental company already has a policy in place that stipulates that recalled vehicles must be fixed before being rented out.

Paice drags Hyundai, Kia into long-running hybrid patent fight with Toyota

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

With all the news coming out recently about the small claims lawsuit over the Honda Civic Hybrid, readers may have forgotten the name behind a long-running legal issue over Toyota's hybrid system: Paice. The latest development is that Paice and the Abell Foundation (an investor in Paice) have sued Hyundai and Kia over the gas-electric technology used in the Optima and Sonota hybrids (pictured), which shares some parts with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. Details on Alex Severinsky's story here.

Paice claims that Hyundai and Kia should have known that Toyota was dealing with legal issues - especially since Paice has been contacting Hyundai about the issue - and says that the Korean automakers are infringing three patents that Paice owns. Toyota and Paice settled their long-looming hybrid patent infringement case in 2010 after eight years, during which time the courts routinely rejected Toyota's request to dismiss the case. Toyota paid royalties to Paice for the Prius, Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h models it sold.

Spy Shots: Mystery EV sportscar spotted testing

Mystery EV

It's been a good long while since we visited the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot spy photography department. Our favorite snappers at CarPix were busily watching over a supplier test facility when the curiosity you see above inched its way out of hiding to perform one quick lap of the snow-covered track before retreating back from whence it came. The sign on the door clearly marks the vehicle as electric (well, "clearly" if you speak German), though details beyond that are conspicuously scarce. From the looks of things, the car has a significantly wider track up front than it does out back, though it's difficult to say exactly what that means.

Which manufacturer is behind this machine? What kind of drivetrain does it boast? Is it actually headed for production? Is it from a major automaker or a niche proposition? The short answer is we haven't the faintest idea. Place your bets in Comments.

But that sounds a bit too serious and German, so to spice thing up the A1 will take a page out of the Italian convertible book by creating a cabrio with a peel-back cloth roof like the Fiat 500C. What you see here are the first rendering we could find...

Study: J.D. Power reports vehicle dependability has substantially improved

2010 Lexus LS460 Sport

Remember the days of planned obsolescence? They're over. The latest J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study shows a 13-percent improvement in new car dependability over the first three years of ownership. The latest sample of 2009 model year vehicles shows the lowest rate of problems since the study's inception in 1990.

The big winner was the Lexus LS, which had the fewest reported problems in the study. Lexus was the highest rated brand as well, followed by Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion. J.D. Power says 25 of 32 automotive brands showed improved dependability, with six declining and one remaining the same.

While J.D. Power was pleased to see automakers producing high quality cars despite the economic disaster unfolding around them three years ago, it did note that some brands are still not getting credit for building reliable vehicles. "During the past four years, models from Buick, Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai and Lincoln have achieved consistently strong levels of dependability," the company's release stated, "but still have relatively high proportions of new-vehicle buyers expressing reliability concerns."

Volkswagen is all about its new MQB platform, and our guess would be that they will replace every car that fits this as soon as possible, even though some are relatively fresh. Repsol Press Release: Interview With Casey Stoner After The Sepang Test

In the second of the two interviews which the Repsol Media Service put out with the Repsol Honda MotoGP riders after the test at Sepang, Casey Stoner gets a chance to answer a few questions. Like Pedrosa, Stoner talks about the differences and similarities of riding the new 1000cc MotoGP bikes when compared to the old 800s, as well as the extra weight that has been added to the bikes. But the Australian also talks about the role that fuel consumption is likely to play with the new, larger capacity bikes running the same amount of fuel as the 800s, and he denies that becoming a father will have any effect on his speed.

Below is the press release interview with Stoner, as sent out by Repsol:
