2014 Infiniti G37 Spy Shots

The current Infiniti G37 will need to soldier on for one more year until its replacement arrives, pictured here in prototype form ahead of its expected world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next March. First sales will likely start in the third quarter of next year, making this one a 2014 model. Though heavily camouflaged, the overall shape of...

VW Golf BlueMotion concept is a diesel looker worth 73.5 mpg

Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion concept - front three-quarter view

The first Volkswagen concept from the 2012 Paris Motor Show is the new Golf BlueMotion, which has enough green blue street cred to be called "the most fuel-efficient Golf ever." How efficient does this seventh-generation Golf need to be to reach this grandiose claim? It burns 3.2 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. That's the equivalent of 73.5 U.S. miles per gallon (on the European cycle). VW says the car has 15-percent improved fuel economy compared to the previous model. We say it's yummy.

The Golf BlueMotion uses VW's new 1.6-litre TDI turbodiesel engine that offers 108 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque - enough so that it can skedaddle on up to 125 miles per hour. It's lighter than older Golfs, has stop-start with battery regen, still seats five and will be available in Europe in the summer of 2013.

The new Golf BlueMotion is also slipperier, with a drag coefficient of just 0.27 thanks to a lower chassis, underbody panels, partially closed off air inlets and other aero upgrades. While the car seen here is technically still a concept, the production car will be made available in two trim lines, Trendline and Comfortline. Trendline is the base version and comes with either two or four doors, a dust and pollen filter and a five-inch touchscreen. The Comfortline model gets "a more exclusive instrument cluster," 16-inch alloy wheels and ParkPilot proximity sensors front and rear.

VW has even come up with this quirky little tidbit: The Gold BlueMotion has a 50-liter (13.2-gallon) tank - enough for a theoretical range of 1,562 km. If the average driver goes 15,000 kilometers (9,300 miles) a year, they "will only have to refuel this Volkswagen ten times per year." Those numbers are a little low for this side of the Atlantic, but it's unlikely we'll get the Golf BlueMotion here, anyway.

More details are available in the official release below.

Rider Reaction Mixed To Spec ECU Proposal In MotoGP

With the MotoGP paddock assembled at the Motorland Aragon circuit, the press got their first chance to gauge rider reaction to the proposal of a spec ECU which Dorna is looking to introduce into MotoGP, most probably from 2014. The reaction was guardedly positive among the MotoGP regulars, though all five riders questioned in the pre-event press conference raised concerns over safety. Only Jonathan Rea, standing in for Casey Stoner in the Repsol Honda team for probably the last time, dissented, believing that MotoGP should be a pure prototype series.

"If everyone has the same electronics, this will be positive for everyone, more positive for the ones who do not have the best electronics," Jorge Lorenzo told the press conference. He was the first to voice safety concerns. "I think we have to try it and to see if we still have the same security on the bike. Because now we avoid a lot of crashes, especially highsides, and maybe with the standard electronics the bike is a bit more dangerous. Because now, the bikes are more powerful, we have more than 250 horsepower, so we have to be careful of these things."

Paris: Venturi America is still awesome, still not coming to the U.S. [w/videos]

Venturi America - live on 2012 Paris Motor Show floor

It's been two years since we first met the Venturi America on this very Paris Motor Show floor, and we're still in love with the idea of an electric car that is as capable on the street as it is on the trail. Venturi Automobiles says it is only making 100 of these door-less electric enduro cars, but despite its name, none of them are to be sold in the U.S.

Venturi calls the America a "high-riding sports car," and on paper, we're willing to agree on both counts based on the car's looks and its specs. The styling of the America is what we might imagine a collaboration between Smart and Jeep, with the two-passenger car looking every bit the part of a modern street-legal dune buggy, right down to its ample ground clearance and open cockpit design. In terms of its performance, the Venturi-developed electric powertrain is said to produce 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is pretty great for a 3,100-pound car. There are also three driver-selectable modes (Cruising, Sport and Super Sport), so the car's dynamic settings allow the driver to choose between maximum driving range and maximum performance. Powered by a 53 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, the America has a driving a range of around 186 miles (presumably in Cruising mode) with a top speed of 124 miles per hour.

Since we're likely never to see a Venture in America on our shores, you'll want to check out our image gallery and videos of the live reveal and an advertisement featurette below. If nothing else, the latter will give you the chance to brush up on your French.

Translogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves it

tesla model s test drive video

Here's a shocker: Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer test drove the Tesla Model S Performance version and apparently had a darn good time doing it.

While only available in the top-of-the-line version for now, the Model S will one day come in four packages - Base, Performance, Signature, and Signature Performance - ranging from about $50,000 to $100,000, after federal incentives. The Performance edition comes with an 85-kW lithium-ion battery and high-performance drive inverter that offers 416 horsepower at 5,000-to-8,600 rpm and 443 pound-feet of torque at 0-5,100 rpm. Hitting the accelerator pedal keeps the interior completely silent, and the only thing heard is Hasemeyer laughing as he watches the speedometer hit 60 miles per hour (starting from zero) in 4.4 seconds. You can see for yourself below, but here's what else is in the video.

Hasemeyer visited the Tesla factory in Fremont, CA, and got to ask questions of chief designer Franz Von Holzhausen. Von Holzhausen says the team created an architecture for the Model S that it calls the skateboard - the batteries and powertrain are between the wheels and below the centerline of the wheels. Everything above that line became an open opportunity to design and create a new electric vehicle. This means there's more space for seats and comfort in the Model S than in most other EVs. You don't have to cross over the battery pack hump when moving around inside the car, for example.

The display touch screen is something to behold. It's easy to view and toggle through to see your energy use, access the web and use the navigation screen and other apps. Above the wheel, drivers can customize the gauge clusters in front of them.

Like most performance style cars, there are a number of modes you can switch to. Hasemeyer changes steering from standard to sport, and describes how this is the option for when you want less play and a little more feel in the steering wheel.

Ted Merendino, product planner for Tesla Motors, explains why the company just released its own proprietary charger. The existing technologies - J1772 and others - didn't really offer the functionality that Tesla needed, he says. The Model S itself can accept everything from an average household plug all the way up the 90-kW DC charger, which it calls the Supercharger.

As we found when we drove the Model S, the EV sets new standards with no compromise and no emissions plus all the bells and whistles, Hasemeyer said. Looks like a consensus is forming.

Hector Barbera Signs With Avintia BQR To Ride CRT Bike For Two Seasons

Ducati's introduction of the junior team strategy, dropping support for the satellite structures that had previously been fielded by Cardion AB and Pramac in MotoGP, has had at least one casualty. With the signing of Ben Spies and Andrea Iannone, there was no more room for Hector Barbera at Ducati. The dropping of Barbera raised eyebrows in some quarters, as Barbera has regularly matched and sometimes even beaten the pace of the factory Ducatis this year.

Barbera may be out of Ducati, but he is not out of MotoGP, however. According to Spanish website Motocuatro.com, Barbera has signed a two-year deal to race with the Avintia BQR team for the next two seasons. The Valencian rider will be racing a CRT machine, most probably an evolution of the Kawasaki-powered FTR bike which Yonny Hernandez and David Salom are currently racing, though no confirmation of equipment has been forthcoming. Barbera turned down an offer from IODA to race the Suter BMW for two seasons, electing instead to stay with the Spanish BQR squad.

COB wonders if $7.5 billion in Federal plug-in vehicle support is worth it

washington dc

The Congressional Budget Office recently released a dour report on the cost of federal policies designed to promote electric vehicles and the role they will play in reducing national gasoline consumption over the next several years. Consumer tax credits for electric vehicles, which can run as high as $7,500, will make up about 25 percent of the $7.5 billion these policies will cost through 2019, the CBO says, and they will have "little or no impact" on overall gasoline consumption.

The CBO looked at tax credits for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (like the Chevrolet Volt) and fully battery-electric vehicles (i.e., Nissan Leaf), and compared them to similar-sized conventional gasoline-engine vehicles with average fuel economy ratings. These EVs are using little or no gasoline and produce less greenhouse gas emissions, but the cost to the government can be high, the CBO found. For each gallon of gasoline not burned as a result of a consumer driving an EV, it will cost the federal government anywhere between $3 and $7.

The federal tax credit may not be enough to offset the higher price of EVs compared to high-mileage conventional cars. The costs of electric vehicles are much higher than similar-sized gasoline vehicles, and the federal tax credit of $7,500 per vehicle is not enough to bridge the gap, the CBO said. And, the bigger the battery, the greater the cost disadvantage for buyers of plug-in vehicles and conventional vehicles.

Part of the problem in meeting gasoline consumption reduction targets is that upcoming federal fuel standards could cancel out gains made by federal tax credits, the CBO study said. The corporate average fuel economy mandate begins with automakers meeting 35.5 mpg by 2016 and 54.5 mpg by 2025. "Increased sales of electric vehicles allow automakers to sell more low-fuel-economy vehicles and still comply with the federal standards that govern the average fuel economy of the vehicles they sell (known as CAFE standards)," the CBO said.

Beyond consumer tax credits, where will the remaining 75 percent of that $7.5 billion cost to the federal government come from? About $2 billion is going into grants to the battery industry and around $3.1 billion is expected to come from unpaid portions of the $25 billion in loans to manufacturers of advanced vehicles.

Nissan FedEx e-NV200 electric concept van delivers in Germany

fedex ev nissan

It looks like Nissan made a special delivery at the Commercial Vehicle International Motor Show in Hanover, Germany, this week: a special concept version of the battery-electric e-NV200 panel van that it's been testing with FedEx since late last year.

The Japanese automaker, whose EV e-NV200 has the same 24-kWh battery and 80-kW motor as the Nissan Leaf, started testing the vehicle with FedEx in London last December and expanded that effort to Yokohama, Japan, this past summer.

Nissan says more testing will be done with FedEx in Singapore, Brazil and the U.S. The vehicle will likely include an option that allows it to be 80-percent recharged in 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. More in Nissan's press release below.

VW Passat Becomes Bowling Ball in Russia [Video]

Some car crashes are spectacular than others, even without any of the people involved getting injured in the process. This Volkswagen Passat driver, from Russia, fails to see the Suzuki Grand Vitara, which was making a left at the intersection, and ploughs straight into it, only to ricochet straight into a van, which was coming the other way.

The accident itself is very spectacular, and the Passat is thrown from one side, to the other, in...

Young car buyers like small cars, indifferent to MPG

When it comes to car-shopping propensity among younger drivers, look at the numbers, then look closer at the reasons behind them.

Generation Y, or those born after the late 1970s, account for about a quarter of those shopping for new small cars, up from 16 percent in 2008, according to a study released by GfK Automotive. The bigger news, though, is that fuel economy isn't what they're most interested in.

In fact, GfK Automotive says, Gen Y buyers prioritize excitement, looks, and driving fun over fuel economy when it comes to reasons to buy a small car. This is an interesting change from their elders. For example, Baby Boomers, who account for about a third of all small car shoppers, prioritized fuel economy over driving excitement, though were still very bullish on small car looks. And Generation X - those following the Baby Boomers - put an even greater emphasis on fuel economy than the Boomers do. Interesting, no? We've got a summary of the report over on GfK Automotive's site.
