With the MotoGP paddock assembled at the Motorland Aragon circuit, the press got their first chance to gauge rider reaction to the proposal of a spec ECU which Dorna is looking to introduce into MotoGP, most probably from 2014. The reaction was guardedly positive among the MotoGP regulars, though all five riders questioned in the pre-event press conference raised concerns over safety. Only Jonathan Rea, standing in for Casey Stoner in the Repsol Honda team for probably the last time, dissented, believing that MotoGP should be a pure prototype series.
"If everyone has the same electronics, this will be positive for everyone, more positive for the ones who do not have the best electronics," Jorge Lorenzo told the press conference. He was the first to voice safety concerns. "I think we have to try it and to see if we still have the same security on the bike. Because now we avoid a lot of crashes, especially highsides, and maybe with the standard electronics the bike is a bit more dangerous. Because now, the bikes are more powerful, we have more than 250 horsepower, so we have to be careful of these things."

Loris Baz, second youngest rider to win a World Superbike race has been confirmed as Tom Sykes's partner at Kawasaki for 2013. Frenchman Baz has earned himself a lot of new fans this year after he replaced Joan Lascorz after the Spaniard's career-ending accident at Imola. What was to be a temporary promotion from Superstock 1000, Baz showed that he was ready for World Superbike.

Ducati's introduction of the junior team strategy, dropping support for the satellite structures that had previously been fielded by Cardion AB and Pramac in MotoGP, has had at least one casualty. With the signing of Ben Spies and Andrea Iannone, there was no more room for Hector Barbera at Ducati. The dropping of Barbera raised eyebrows in some quarters, as Barbera has regularly matched and sometimes even beaten the pace of the factory Ducatis this year.
Barbera may be out of Ducati, but he is not out of MotoGP, however. According to Spanish website Motocuatro.com, Barbera has signed a two-year deal to race with the Avintia BQR team for the next two seasons. The Valencian rider will be racing a CRT machine, most probably an evolution of the Kawasaki-powered FTR bike which Yonny Hernandez and David Salom are currently racing, though no confirmation of equipment has been forthcoming. Barbera turned down an offer from IODA to race the Suter BMW for two seasons, electing instead to stay with the Spanish BQR squad.
