Scarlet Motors collaborates with Helsinki's Electric RaceAbout team
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Europe/EU

Frankly, Scarlet, we do give a damn.
A new Finnish electric vehicle company called Scarlet has reached a deal with Helsinki's Metropolia University of Applied Science to collaborate on powertrain advancements for Scarlet's sports car.
Scarlet was interested in Metropolia's work on the development of the 375-horsepower Electric RaceAbout (E-RA) prototype. To refresh everyone's memory, in March, the E-RA set a world speed record for an EV on ice (this is Finland, after all), going 161.59 miles per hour and hitting an average of 156.65 mph over two time trials. There's a video of those trials here.
Scarlet didn't divulge further details about what the collaboration plans to accomplish, other than to say R&D work on "other parts of the Scarlet ecosystem" will be involved. Whatever it ends up being, we assume it will be fast. See Scarlet's press release below.

Audi working on new fuels to make cars carbon neutral
Filed under: Technology, Audi

Even as automakers move to increase the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell vehicles and hybrids, internal combustion technology is not standing still. In fact, Audi believes that the future will see a mix of propulsion technologies and that internal combustion can play a role in producing vehicles that have minimal CO2 impact on the environment. As shown by Toyota's recent announcement to slow-walk EVs, the industry is looking into other alternatives besides pure electrics to meet ever-tightening Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and zero-emission mandates like those enacted by California.A car can be considered CO2 neutral if the amount of greenhouse gas used in creating the fuel is balanced against the CO2 emitted by the vehicle in operation.
Rupert Stadler, Audi's chairman, asserts that "the future of mobility will be multi-faceted." And while Audi will offer pure electrics, like the R8 E-Tron, officials from the company insist that the combustion engine still remains an important element in the overall picture. Key elements in this strategy include more fuel efficient gas and diesel engines using such advanced technology as electric forced induction and stop-start technology that includes shutting the engine off when the vehicle is coasting. Audi will also offer a unique dual-fuel A3 that uses both compressed natural gas (CNG) and gasoline power that promises a range of around 750 miles in an A3.
Beyond the approach of upgrading the hardware, Audi is also looking at vehicle fuels themselves as a means to reduce carbon emissions. The company believes that an internal combustion car can be considered CO2 neutral if the amount of greenhouse gas used in creating the fuel is balanced against the CO2 emitted by the vehicle in operation. The argument goes that a BEV is only CO2-free if its electricity comes from nuclear, hydro, wind or solar sources and actually contributes to CO2 emissions if the electricity comes from a coal- or gas-fired generator. Following this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion, Audi is now involved in several projects to make ethanol, diesel and natural gas that uses CO2 in the production process.

Quick Spin: 2013 BMW X6 M
Filed under: Performance, Crossover, BMW, Quick Spins

When it comes to automotive oddities, the BMW X6 is one for the books thanks to its unusual chopped-roof crossover styling - a combination that BMW has long referred to as a "Sports Activity Coupe." But the BMW X6 M, the low volume high-performance variant, turns things up with oversized Matchbox-like wheels, a criminally powerful engine under hood and plenty of go-fast goodies. While it is far from appearing dated, BMW nevertheless made a few tweaks for the 2013 model year.
Driving Notes
- Subtle enhancements include a 'power bulge' hood (identical to the one used on the now-defunct BMW X6 ActiveHybrid), minor cosmetic tweaks to the BMW-signature kidney grille and headlight improvements (HID beams are standard with LED headlights new to the options list). Wrapping up the changes, the brake calipers have been painted "M Blue" and front sport seats are now fitted at no additional cost. (The M graphics, and other carbon fiber components as shown above on our test vehicle, are additional options or dealer accessories.)
- The X6 M drives just as wickedly as it looks. The twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumps out a very impressive 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, which is enough muscle to propel the 5,324-pound five-passenger CUV to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds (top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph).
- Massive tires (275/40R20 up front and 315/35R20 in the rear) and permanent all-wheel drive means the M has the tenacity and grip of a gecko, while sport suspension tuning helps it maintain its poise on even the most challenging roads.
- The X6 M is a real hoot to drive. The commanding seating position, bolstered sport seats and thick steering wheel immediately put the driver in the proper mindset. It seriously scoots once the turbochargers are spooled (leaving an aggressive exhaust note in its wake) and the well-tuned underpinnings deliver mass-defying agility.
- Despite the crossover's kick-in-the pants performance, we found the X6 M a single-mission vehicle - the hatchback is big, but its utility value is rather low. Not helping matters is a high curb weight, high drag coefficient (0.38) and a thirsty engine. Those combine to mean owners will spend lots of time opening the fuel filler door (the EPA rates the X6 M at 12 miles per gallon city and 17 mpg highway).
- Feeding the beast is costly, but so is its base price. The 2013 X6 M, the Ultimate Driving Machine for the wealthy few who appreciate its styling (and absurdity), starts at $93,795 including destination.

Official: 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible makes first official appearance
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Convertible, Volkswagen, Diesel

Volkswagen has pulled back the wraps on the 2013 Beetle Convertible ahead of the vehicle's debut at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The drophead makes use of the same flattened roof line of the 2012 Beetle Coupe when the folding soft top is in place. Stow the roof, and the mechanism lays flat to increase rear visibility. Volkswagen says the roof can go from fully stowed to in place in just 10 seconds, and engineers built in an automatic rollover support system comprised of two computer-actuated bars behind the rear seat that pop up in just four milliseconds in the event of a collision.
Buyers can choose between three engine options, including a 2.5-liter five-cylinder good for 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder is also available with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque and can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Finally, diesel buyers will be happy to hear Volkswagen will offer the 2013 Beetle Convertible with a familiar 2.0 turbo-diesel four-cylinder good for 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. That mill can be bolted to a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG. Check out the full press release below.

Casey Stoner To Return At Motegi
Casey Stoner is to rejoin the MotoGP paddock in Motegi. In a posting on his Repsol blog, Stoner confirmed that he will fly to Japan with the intention of trying to race. "I've been resting, having some physio and following doctor's orders to recover. The good news is that I feel I can race in Motegi and will be rejoining my team next week and I can't wait to get back on track," the reigning World Champion wrote in his Repsol blog.
Stoner was forced to take a break from racing after badly damaging his ankle in a huge highside crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August. Though he raced that weekend, he was forced to pull out of the next event at Brno just a few days later, for fear of suffering permanent damage in the event of a crash.
