Official: Beetle R-Line coming to America, orders now being accepted
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Volkswagen

Volkswagen has jilted American enthusiasts once, by denying them the chance to pilot the Scirocco in the US. In September, it seemed like the German automaker was going to take the same course of action with the sporty Beetle R-Line. Now, comes word that the R-Line bug may be headed our way after all. This news comes from AskAVWSalesGuy.com. As you may have guessed, it is a blog written by a Volkswagen salesperson. According to the recent post, Volkswagen is now taking orders for the new Beetle R-Line, with delivery set for February or early March.
We've reached out to Volkswagen and it has been confirmed that the R-Line version of the Beetle will he coming to the US. In fact, it was brought to our attention that this news broke back in November, but may have been overshadowed by the buzz around the Beetle Convertible.
If you recall, the R-Line is the latest in what is becoming a growing family of Volkswagen Beetle variants. The package includes revised bodywork, 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights and LED license plate lights. Inside the R-Line receives leather seating surfaces and a navigation system. In Europe, the exterior package alone will cost 1,290 euros (about $1,665) and both the exterior and interior combined will set you back 1,675 euros ($2,162). European customers can select this package with either the 1.4 TSI Beetle or the TDI model. US pricing for this package has not yet been announced, but it is worth noting that the R-Line will be offered only on the Beetle Turbo. To learn more about the sported-up Bug, check out the press release below

Report: Hyundai working to replace car keys with smartphones
Filed under: Budget, Technology, Hyundai, South Korea

Hyundai is working on technology that may allow you to access your vehicle with nothing more than a swipe of your smartphone. The automaker's i30 Connectivity Concept boasts an embedded NFC tag that allows the user to open the doors with a quick swipe. Drop the phone in the center console, and the driver can pair with the on-board touch screen and start the car. An inductive charging plate takes care of keeping the phone alive without having to fuss with cords or adapters. What's more, Hyundai says that the system can recognize individual smartphones, which means each user can have a customized experience.
Using the company's MirrorLink, the car can automatically sync not only contacts and apps, but also navigation destinations and streaming audio. More interestingly, the system uses technology available right now, and Hyundai says the system will be available on its next-generation of vehicles starting in 2015. While we're all for sending bulky key fobs to the scrap heap, hurdles like previous owner security concerns and the hitch of what happens if your phone dies before you can make it to your car will need to be overcome. You can read the full writeup over at Wired.

Mitsubishi sets Outlander PHEV debut for Jan 24 in Japan
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Mitsubishi, Japan

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is just around the corner, at least in Japan. There, the first plug-in hybrid crossover will go on sale January 24 with an MSRP of between 3,324,000 and 4,297,000 yen (between US$38,800 and $50,200), including Japan's consumption tax. After government incentives, the CUV can be had for the equivalent of around $33,000. While prices are not accurately comparable across borders, the only other plug-in vehicle of similar size, the Toyota RAV4 EV, starts at $49,800, and qualifies for a federal incentive of up to $7,500.
Mitsubishi says the Outlander PHEV can go around up to 37 miles on battery power alone thanks to a 12-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and gets something like 67 km/liter (roughly 157 miles per gallon equivalent) when measured on the Japanese JC08 mode. The CUV uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC gas engine and gets 18.6 km/l (44 mpg) when operating as a normal hybrid. There are more details in the press release below.
The vehicle has three drive modes. EV Drive Mode (aka pure electric), Series Hybrid Mode (where the gas engine acts like a generator for the motors), Parallel Hybrid Mode (used at high speeds, where the engine does most of the work moving the CUV, with some assist from the motors). There are also Battery Charge and Battery Save modes. Battery Charge mode is odd in that you can use gasoline to charge the battery, in case coal-powered electricity isn't dirty enough for you.
We first saw the plug-in version of the Outlander at this year's Paris Motor Show. After the Japanese launch, the plug-in Outlander will become available in Europe and North America.

Report: Kia design chief Peter Schreyer named Hyundai-Kia President
Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Hyundai, Kia, South Korea

Automotive News reports Peter Schreyer has been appointed the first non-Korean president of Hyundai-Kia Motor Group. Schreyer is expected to retain his role as the chief designer for Kia, while also taking on new, high-level executive duties. He is now one of three presidents at the automaker.
The designer made a name for himself at Volkswagen, where he penned the 1998 New Beetle and lent his eye to the Audi TT. In 2006, Schreyer moved to Kia, where he quickly revised the brand's styling from bland, forgettable lines to bold, "tiger nose" creations. Analysts attribute much of the brand's recent sales success to Schreyer's influence.
Kia is expected to move 2.75 million units worldwide next year, while sister company Hyundai will likely beat its 2012 sales forecast of 4.29 million units, according to CFO Lee Won Hee.

Report: Fisker may owe Delaware money if factory plans fall through
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Legislation and Policy, Fisker

Fisker Automotive has had a tough year, making the news for everything from recalls to presidential politics - Mitt Romney called the company a "loser" during the debates - to a car catching on fire to Justin Bieber chroming his Karma plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and then getting paparazzi involved in a crash as they chased after him.
A lot of this was not the company's fault. Who can control Bieber, after all, or what gets said in the heat of a campaign? Also, the fire was not due to the advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Karmas, but was instead the fault of a shoddy cooling fan. But still, the problems piled up. Now there's a new one.
Add the oldest state in the union to the list of who Fisker might owe money to if expansion plans for its extended-range plug-in vehicles fall through. California-based Fisker, which at one time planned to open a factory in Delaware for production of the Atlantic PHEV by the end of this year, could owe the state $21.5 million (in the form of a repaid grant and loan) if those plans never materialize, Delaware Online reports.
Fisker, which had said the plant would employ about 2,500 workers at the factory, would owe $12.5 million if the automaker hires between 1,500 and 2,500 people, and another $9 million if Fisker doesn't hit the 1,500-worker quota. The latest news is that Fisker could start production on the Atlantic in 2014 or 2015, but where and when, exactly, has not been announced.
Either way, Fisker's obligation to Delaware would come after the company repaid the approximately $200 million it owes the US government. This money is part of a Department of Energy loan that was initially slated to be $529 million had Fisker hit certain production deadlines and targets for its first model, the Karma. Those didn't happen, and now a problem with an important supplier continues to hold things up. Fisker production is frozen while bankrupt battery supplier A123 Systems clears up its ownership situation. Earlier this month, the China-based Wanxiang Group reached an agreement through the Delaware bankruptcy court to buy A123 Systems, though that agreement is being scrutinized by some members of Congress over the potential leakage of US trade secrets to China. Johnson Controls isn't done with the deal, either.

ETC: Volkswagen Sweden builds a Touareg tank to tackle winter
Filed under: Aftermarket, SUV, Europe, Volkswagen, Specialty, Off-Road

When it comes to the ingenuity of the automotive aftermarket, a good bit of inspiration often seems to come from the creator's native market. Lifted Jeep Wrangler creations climb out of mountainous regions like Moab, while low-riders flow from the massive urban sprawl of Los Angeles. The vehicle you see above is no different. Dubbed the "Snowareg," it is a creation by Volkswagen of Sweden, and is perfectly suited for harsh Swedish winters. Based on a Touareg V8 TDI, the Snowareg sends 340 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque to a modified set of treads at each wheel.
Very little information is given outside of that, but from what we can tell from these photos, anyone lucky to venture into the elements with the Snowareg will be doing so in style. It appears to come with the full bevy of VW options, including Dynaudio stereo, panoramic moonroof, dual-zone climate control and (of course) heated seats. As we said, very little information was given, but it's a fair assumption that this monster isn't foreshadowing any future options packages...

Review: 2012 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid [w/video]
Filed under: Hybrid, Crossover, Volkswagen, New Car Reviews
Polished Utility Impresses, Just Not At The Pump
With its subtle badging out of sight, and from a distance greater than 30 feet, Volkswagen's flagship Touareg Hybrid can hardly be differentiated from its entry-level Touareg V6 sibling. But pop the hood or take it for a quick spin, and the gasoline-electric utility quickly reveals itself as one of the most complex vehicles ever to grace the German automaker's showroom.
Predictably, there is always downside to such technical wizardry. Comprehensive development and revolutionary components, including a large nickel metal-hydride battery pack, don't come cheap. As a result, the Touareg Hybrid is the most expensive vehicle in today's Volkswagen lineup, with a base price eclipsing the standard Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and even the Porsche Cayenne.
So why would someone spend more than $60,000 to put this particular Volkswagen in his or her driveway? To answer that question and to learn more about the automaker's flagship softroader, we spent a full week with it.

Report: Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible photos hit web early
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Convertible, Performance, Bentley, Luxury

It was Indiana Jones and that whole ark episode that gave us the best example of what happens after leaks: once you break the seal, all hell breaks loose and there's no way you're putting it back. We aren't sure who lifted the lid, but official photos of the 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible showed up on Flickr last week, and so here we are presenting them to you.
If it follows the Bentley playbook as the last GT Speed - and we have no reason to believe it won't - beyond the lack of a top there won't be much difference between it and the coupe than a few minor numerals. There will be a W12 in front with 616 horsepower and 590 foot-pounds of torque running through an eight-speed transmission, and the dash from standstill to 60 miles per hour will clock in somewhere around four seconds. That's some 21-inch rolling stock setting up the stance, and unless it's gotten slower than the last GT Speed, ultimate velocity with the top up should be at least 200 mph.
It will be undeniably fast. As for the paint, you can make up your own minds about that while you peep its angles in the high-res gallery. We'll find out the rest when the world's purplest droptop is revealed at the Detroit Auto Show.

Official: Daimler exec Harald Kroeger named to Tesla board
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Manufacturing/Plants, Tesla Motors

Tesla Motors has brought in another Daimler AG executive to its board of directors - Harald Kroeger, Daimler's vice president of electrics, electronics and e-Drive. Kroeger replaces Daimler's Herbert Koehler, who resigned from the Tesla board on December 12.
Koehler had been a board member since Daimler invested in the company in 2009. As Tesla CEO Elon Musk told us earlier this year, Tesla received a $50-million investment at a much-needed time in the electric carmaker's history. As Musk said, "thankfully, Daimler, with whom we had a small deal to produce battery packs for the Smart [ED] actually invested $50 million into Tesla in the nick of time. It wasn't some huge altruistic gesture, but nonetheless, they had to have faith that their $50 million wouldn't go down the drain."
Other than battery packs for the Smart electric drive, Tesla hasn't yet announced signing another contract with Daimler similar to Tesla's alliance with Toyota on its RAV4 EV's electric powertrain system. Tesla will also make a powertrain for the B-Class E-Cell, but details are sparse on that. Musk did say that "it's a big program, it's not a marketing or a demonstration program. It is a serious, high-volume program." In a recent public regulatory filing, Tesla stated that the board change is the "result of a natural transition of responsibilities at Daimler AG with respect to the development of electric vehicle powertrains."
Tesla's financial sheet is getting better, as Tesla announced being cash flow positive earlier this month, and that profits may be earned next year through sales of its Model S. Musk also seems to be doing well - he's described in the Automotive News article as "billionaire Elon Musk." Along with his role at SpaceX, Musk is chairman of home solar panel-installer SolarCity, and still finds time to oversee luxury electric carmaker Tesla Motors.

Resurfacing To Start At Phillip Island On Tuesday
After several years of steady deterioration, the surface at Phillip Island is about to get fixed. According to reports from Australia, work commences on resurfacing the iconic Australian circuit on Tuesday morning, and over a period of two days, the track will receive a fresh layer of asphalt, for the first time since 1998.
The new surface is to be laid over a flatter substrate, with 40mm of the old tarmac already having been removed to make way for the new asphalt. The aim of the project is to remove the bumps which have accrued over the years, as the track has taken punishment from MotoGP, World Superbikes, Australian V8 Supercars and the many track days and other events which happen at the circuit nearly all year round. Casey Stoner was brought in to consult on the project, the former MotoGP champion telling the media in October that he had advised the company which bumps to remove (most of them) and which bumps to leave in as they added to the circuit's character.
