Featured: BMW Shanghai: Driving in mega cities, designing the future and more
Filed under: China, Technology, BMW, Design/Style

A few days before the Shanghai Motor Show kicked off, we were part of an international group of media that was invited to have a look at the BMW Designworks Shanghai Studio and ConnectedDrive Lab facility. The building that BMW found to house its Chinese think tank is in a lovely part of Shanghai known as the former French Concession. The late 1890s and early 1900s French architectural style, brick-paved streets and tree-lined spaces feel a world apart from the ultra-modern heart of Shanghai, and the BMW enclave is a suitable mix of high-tech and throwback cool. The BMW enclave is a suitable mix of high-tech and throwback cool.
We were visiting, in short, to understand just why BMW has found it important to have design and research capability in China. As it turns out, answering those questions also served to shed some light on the Chinese auto market as a whole - what it looks like today and where it's going over the next few years.
Of course, the basic idea of developing new facilities and human resources in a foreign market is to be able to better design and build cars for that market. In terms of design, this isn't a new concept. In terms of BMW design, and more specifically its DesignworksUSA team, the concept has been a reality for more than ten years now. In Shanghai, the process is just getting going, with the BMW team getting a late start, setting up shop just last year.

Shanghai: Detroit Electric, Geely announce strategic partnership for electric vehicles
Filed under: Shanghai Motor Show, Electric, MISC

Geely and Detroit Electric have been working quietly for three years on feasibility studies and a joint development program that finally selected the EC7. All of the vehicles that emerge from the strategic partnership will be sold in China, and the first model, which will be called the EC7-EV and come in two range flavors (100 and 160 miles) is due in 2014. The EC7-EV will apparently have a top speed of over 124 miles per hour. The companies are bold enough to put out sales predictions already, saying they expect 3,000 to be sold in the first year and 30,000 in the first three years.
Detroit Electric is in the midst of an aggressive launch phase, with plans to already start building the SP:01 in Michigan in August. To refresh your memory, the SP:01 scoots on up to 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds on the way up to a top speed of 155 mph. The powertrain includes a 37-kWh lithium-polymer battery and an air-cooled, asynchronous AC electric motor that puts out 201 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. The range (as calculated on the New European Driving Cycle) is 180 miles - we figure that means about 150 miles using US tests.

Official: Twizy Renault Sport F1 is a racy EV that defies categorization
Filed under: Concept Cars, Motorsports, Performance, Renault, Specialty, Electric

It recently came out that Porsche mulled a return to Formula One but chose a return to Le Mans instead, citing F1 technology's lack of relevance to its road cars. Well Porsche, take this: the Twizy Renault Sport F1 concept, "a bridge between the world of F1 technology and that of production cars." The French Formula One legend took a 17-horsepower electric Twizy and replaced the back seat with an 80-hp KERS unit, just like the ones it produces for its F1 customer teams. Then it added tires from a Formula 2 Renault and a steering wheel derived from a Formula 3.5 Renault, a front splitter, sidepods and open-wheeler mirrors. Yes, it's absurd - and by absurd we mean outstanding.
There are two KERS modes the driver can use, the first a Recovery mode that uses the Twizy's main 17-hp electric motor to recoup energy since the city car can't produce enough energy through braking to repower the KERS unit. The other is Boost mode, which allows a 13-second burst using the combined 97 horsepower available with the two motors. A single-seater-style rain light is affixed out back, and it illuminates when in Boost mode. The result is a Twizy that can dash from 0-60 miles per hour as quick as Renault's fastest car, the Megane Renaultsport 265, listed by Car magazine at six seconds. The Twizy's top speed in Boost mode climbs from 53 mph to 68 mph.
It will be shown at various events throughout the year, starting with the World Series by Renault race in Aragon, Spain on April 27 and 28. You can read all about it right now in the press release below.

Report: Toyota Prius line may not reach 2013 sales target
Filed under: Car Buying, Hybrid, Hatchback, Toyota

2012 was a good year for the Toyota Prius line, the hybrid that started it all moving 236,659 units, being the best-selling model in California for the year and the Prius C (pictured) being deemed the most reliable car of 2012 by Consumer Reports. Then 2013 happened, and gas prices dropped more than expected, and people haven't been buying the little hybrids like they used to.
A report in Bloomberg says Toyota set 250,000 units as the Prius family's sales target for this year, but hits like the double-digit drop in year-on-year performance in February have helped lower 2013 sales by 8.4 percent compared to 2012, making the objective "a challenge" to reach. The declines in Prius sales come even as hybrid sales overall were up in the first couple of months this year, including sales of other Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Jim Lentz, Toyota's North American chief, said the Prius target would be adjusted if necessary.

Report: Nissan beats Tesla in KBB's 'Green Car' list
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan

When going from 0 to 60 miles per hour, the Nissan Leaf may be about three seconds slower than the Tesla Model S, but when it comes to Kelly Blue Book's list of "10 Best Green Cars of 2013," the Leaf beats out its more expensive all-electric brethren.
KBB put the Leaf at the top of its list, noting that "you won't find an all-electric car that offers a better balance of range, practicality, refinement and value." The number two - the Tesla Model S - was also commended for being "among the coolest cars available, electric or otherwise." KBB named the Ford Focus Electric the third-best green car, followed up by the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in and the Toyota Prius Plug-in.
Rounding out KBB's top ten were the Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid; the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid; Honda Fit EV; the Toyota Avalon Hybrid; and the Lincoln MKZ hybrid. In case you lost track, KBB's top 10 included four electric vehicles, three hybrids, two plug-in hybrids and an extended-range plug-in. Would your top ten list look the same?
Check out the KBB list here.
