AVL unveils extended-range Fuel Cell Commuter

Powertrain engineering firm AVL choose the Austria Tec Week (PDF warning) at Expo 2010 Shanghai to debut its Fuel Cell Commuter (FCC), a high-tech electric vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell range extender. At first glance, the FCC looks like nothing more than a multi-passenger golf cart sporting a large black tank in the rear, but looks can be deceiving. The FCC features an on-board hydrogen fuel cell system that generates electricity to function as a range extender for the vehicle's battery pack. AVL believes that its fuel cell setup will be a true time saver with increased functionality compared to battery-only designs, stating:
The substantial advantage of the AVL Fuel Cell Commuter (AVL FCC) is its continuous availability due to the significantly reduced charging time: refueling with hydrogen only takes a few minutes, while compared to that, charging a battery takes a few hours. These time savings become possible with a small fuel cell in the range extender.
Of course, AVL makes no mention of the possibility that owners could be inconvenienced in their search for a hydrogen supply, nor does it note pricing or specs for the FCC.
