Powertrain engineering firm AVL choose the Austria Tec Week (PDF warning) at Expo 2010 Shanghai to debut its Fuel Cell Commuter (FCC), a high-tech electric vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell range extender. At first glance, the FCC looks like nothing more than a multi-passenger golf cart sporting a large black tank in the rear, but looks can be deceiving. The FCC features an on-board hydrogen fuel cell system that generates electricity to function as a range extender for the vehicle's battery pack. AVL believes that its fuel cell setup will be a true time saver with increased functionality compared to battery-only designs, stating:
Of course, AVL makes no mention of the possibility that owners could be inconvenienced in their search for a hydrogen supply, nor does it note pricing or specs for the FCC.The substantial advantage of the AVL Fuel Cell Commuter (AVL FCC) is its continuous availability due to the significantly reduced charging time: refueling with hydrogen only takes a few minutes, while compared to that, charging a battery takes a few hours. These time savings become possible with a small fuel cell in the range extender.
