Dow Kokam, PVI partner on electric refuse truck for Parisian suburb

Dow Kokam and PVI have teamed up to develop a small fleet of battery-powered garbage trucks. The electric truck and its interchangeable battery system, which will be produced and assembled in France, were unveiled last week at Pollutec 2010.

The 26-ton, zero-emission truck looks impressive on paper. It's designed to offer performance that's comparable to a conventional refuse truck, which means it will offer a top speed of 43.5 miles per hour under full load, has abundant low-end torque and can collect up to 16 tons of trash in a full day. The modular battery pack can be swapped out in minutes or charged to near capacity during down times, allowing for the vehicle to be in use for the majority of the day. By converting over to electric, one refuse truck can eliminate a claimed 130 tons of CO2 per year.

First deployment of the electric refuse truck is scheduled for early 2011 in the Parisian suburb of Courbevoie. By the end of next year, a fleet of 11 of the advanced garbage trucks will scurry down public roads there collecting trash.
