Pirelli Predicts Nothing for Canadian GP

Planning to bring to the Canadian Grand Prix the same mixture of tires it use on the Monaco circuit last weekend, tire manufacturer Pirelli is reserved when it comes to trying to predict how the tires will behave on Canadian race track and road tarmac.

Paul Hembery, Pirelli's motorsports head told Autosport however that it is likely the degradation of the compound will not be as severe as some might think. The soft and super soft rubbers for the Canadian race are meant to provide the cars wi...

Audi announces e-gas project; A3 TCNG production scheduled for 2013

Audi e-gas project car

In 2013, Audi will kick off series production of its A3 TCNG, a vehicle powered by what the automaker calls e-gas - a synthetic gas produced via the methanation of hydrogen created by electrolysis using renewable sources of energy. When an A3 TCNG owner refuels with e-gas, Audi says that the corresponding amount of renewable energy required to produce the unique fuel will be fed back into the grid.

E-gas' octane rating of approximately 130 RON allows Audi to use a lofty compression ratio in the A3 TCNG's turbocharged engine, which in turn ensures optimum fuel efficiency. The A3 TCNG is equipped to run, if needed, on conventional gasoline with no drop in overall performance, according to Audi.

The A3 TCNG is but one part of Audi's e-gas project, which the automaker has launched in the northern German city of Hamburg as part of an effort to achieve carbon dioxide neutral mobility. The e-gas project, which after three years of research is entering the practical phase, uses wind-generated electricity to manufacture hydrogen by means of electrolysis. The hydrogen can then be used as a source of energy for fuel-cell vehicles or converted to methane, which Audi refers to as e-gas. According to the German automaker, the e-gas project will provide a solution to store surplus energy generated by wind turbines and promote the use of "green power" to charge electric vehicles.

Hit the jump for a read of Audi's extensive press release, which details the automaker's multi-faceted route to CO2-neutral mobility.

Nissan gas-powered everything
Nissan's "Gas Powered Everything" ad - Click above to watch the videos after the jump

What would the world be like if everything were powered by gasoline?

Renault-Nissan has kicked off a massive advertising campaign intended to highlight the advanced technology of electric vehicles with the debut of a pair of videos that bang home the point that consumers depend upon electricity to power items used everyday and that using gasoline is, in some instances, utterly ridiculous.

In one spot, a middle-aged man wakes up for work to the burning whistle of his gas-powered alarm clock and with a few fierce tugs at his coffee maker's rip cord, manages to fire up the gas-gulping machine. That same man, while at the office, walks up to a miniature gas pump to refuel his laptop computer.

Oh, and the owner of a Chevrolet Volt, while standing at the gas pump refueling his plug-in hybrid, watches in envy as another man across the street unplugs his Nissan Leaf and drives off as onlookers watch in amazement. Yep, that's how Nissan sees the world if "Gas Powered Everything."

Since the videos are, in our humble opinion, absolutely hilarious, we'll refrain from revealing too much. Hit the jump to view the clips. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Dixon Leads Carb Day Practice at Indy

Scott Dixon Photo: Anne Proffit Final practice for Sunday's 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500 took place on a cool, overcast morning from 11AM to noon and was, for the most part without incident - only a debris caution marred the action. Scott Dixon was quickest at 225.474 mph with polesitter Alex Tagliani second at 224.739 mph. In all the 33...

2011 WSBK Miller Sunday Roundup: In A Downpour, Racing Motorcycles Looks Like The Hard Work It Is

A drop or two of rain always adds an extra dimension to motorcycle racing, and Sunday at Miller saw more than a drop or two of rain. That rain had a pretty big impact on the order, with riders such as BMW's Leon Haslam, who had struggled in the dry, suddenly finding themselves near the very top in the morning downpour, then dropping back as the conditions improved a little.

In fact, the rain may have inadvertently highlighted BMW's problem: In the dry, Corser was going strongly while Haslam struggled. In the wet, Haslam positively flew while Corser dropped down the order. As the conditions improved, the fates of the two men reversed, Haslam knocked out of Superpole 2 - crashing while trying to push - while Corser secured a spot on the second row of the grid. The settings of one appear not to suit the settings of the other, and that may go some way towards explaining why the development of the S1000RR has been erratic. The electronics, especially, have been the BMW's bugbear, with the complex system that BMW has developed in-house causing the riders, team and engineers plenty of headaches.

Harvick Takes Charlotte from Earnhardt

It's proving to be an exciting season for Richard Childress Racing's driver Kevin Harvick, who snatched his third win of the season at the Coke 600 race in Charlotte. But what matters most for fans was not Harvick's win, but rather Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s failure.

Having scored absolutely no win in the past 104 races before Coke 600, Earnhardt seemed well on his way to breaking the curse. Leading the pack with about one mile left to go, Earnhardt was once again struck by misfortune as his car r...
