Mulally Says Ford Will Add 7,000 US Jobs

Ford's CEO Alan Mulally has revealed the automakers plan to add a further 7,000 jobs in the next couple of years, as he believes in the strength of the US economy going forward.

According to Bloomberg, Ford has stated in discussions with the UAW union for a new four-year contract that a full 10,000 jobs could be added.

We are actually going to add nearly 7,000 new jobs in the U.S. over the next two years. And you can imagine that with that backdrop that the attitude of everybody is how do ...

Spyshots: Mercedes Benz B-Class AMG

Reports that Mercedes is planning an AMG version of the new B-Class that made its debut in Frankfurt have been rampant, and we are pleased to say they were correct. That's right ladies and gentlemen, the B-Classe AMG has been spotted with two exhaust round the back and a bigger scoops round the front to suck in more air.

The company expects that a smaller AMG model that's still practical will attract young buyers. Modifications are expected to follow AMG's traditional range of improvements in...

Video: The aquatic camper we've been waiting for

Sealander Amphibious Camper

Behold the Sealander; Germany's take on go-anywhere camper. This little vessel is small and light enough to be towed by any modestly-powered CUV and features a fully-configurable interior. Inside, there's space for a four-person table, a kitchenette and a sleeping area, and there's even space outside for a deck. Why would you want a deck on your tiny camper? Because you'll need somewhere to stand when you take to the open seas in your home away from home. As its name suggests, the Sealander is completely amphibious. All you have to do is strap on the pint-sized motor and avoid any small craft warnings.

If you've got an inkling to call der Schwimmcaravan your very own, you'll need to brush up on your German and import one from the EU. Head over to the Sealander site for more information, and check out a video of the aquatic RV in action.

Moving Money in Japan

They do things a little differently in Japan. Now that we've qualified for the Understatement Of The Year award, allow us to elaborate. Here in the United States, banks rely on privately-contracted security services to move large quantities of money from one secure location to another. These armed guards roll around our cities in the urban equivalent of wheeled tanks, complete with heavy armor, tires that can't be flattened and enough bulletproof glass to make the president seriously consider trading in The Beast for something with a little more flair.

That's not the case in Japan. In that neck of the woods, banks ferry their cash about in what look like unarmored, clearly marked vans. Crewing these decidedly less tactical vehicles is apparently a pair of guards, each armed with nothing more than a helmet, a whistle and a baton. But what these guys lack in gear they make up for in preparation. Before both men can enter the vehicle, one must make a full walk-around to ensure no one is waiting to pounce on the van. In addition, before any money is brought out into the light of day, it's not uncommon for one or both guards to make a thorough sweep of the surrounding area. Sound bizarre? Take a look at the video after the jump and see for yourself.

Caterham and Lotus now have one more thing in common: both companies are looking to revolutionize their model range in the future. While we've already been flooded with Lotus' plans, it is now time to see what Caterham is cooking.

Murphy Express in Tennessee becomes first gas station to install Level 3 quick-charger

Stemming from an agreement signed back in September of 2010, Eaton Corporation and Murphy Oil USA have revealed what's believed to be the nation's first Level 3 quick-charge unit installed at, wait for it, a gas station.

The Eaton DC Quick Charger, installed at
Murphy Express Gas on Lee Highway in Chattanooga, TN, can recharge electric vehicles to 80-percent capacity in less than 30 minutes. A Murphy Oil spokesperson told The Chattanoogan that:
Our business model is built around providing customers with the highest quality fuel at the best possible price. In this spirit, we are testing the feasibility of electric charging stations to see if it makes sense for consumers and our business.
Murphy Express Gas says the quick-charge station is open to the public and is free to use. Murphy Oil aims to install similar DC quick-charge units at "several more gas stations" by the end of 2011, in case you want to remake those Chevy Volt gas station ads with a different ending.

First Drive: 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In

You Say You Want An Evolution?

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In

Here's a game that the first people who buy the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid should play with their other Prius-driving friends: Let them slide behind the wheel and see if they can even tell that it isn't a standard, third-generation Prius. Very few will be able to tell. That's how subtle the changes are between the two vehicles, at least, to someone who isn't looking too closely. After driving the corded Prius in California recently, we can confidently say that from both the outside and behind the wheel, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid looks, drives and feels pretty much like any other example of the world's most popular hybrid. Of course, this Prius does receive some important advances - ones that hardcore fans will notice them right away - but it's more than obvious that Toyota's strategy with its new model is evolution, not revolution.

The changes start with the plug-in's new lithium-ion battery pack. Much smaller than the packs used in the two most popular plug-in vehicles on the market, the Prius Plug-in's 176-pound, 4.4-kWh battery pack offers just enough juice, Toyota says, for an "electric-only driving range of up to 15 miles at a maximum speed of 62 mile-per-hour" (More on how this isn't exactly true after the jump).

Video: Road & Track welcomes a select few to the two-second club

The Two-Second Club

There are many ways to measure a car's performance, and no shortage of benchmarks against which to judge them. The 200 mile-per-hour mark, for example, holds its share of bragging rights. And back in the day, Road & Track would hold shootouts to determine which cars made the cut and which did not. But now the magazine is back with a new benchmark, one that's a lot tougher to beat: the two-second sprint to sixty.

There are only a few cars - that is, showroom-stock production cars - in the world that can run from 0-60 in less than three seconds. Most of them are all-wheel drive, have dual-clutch transmissions, and are made by one division or another of the Volkswagen Group. R&T admitted the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, Porsche 911 Turbo S and Nissan GT-R to the exclusive club. Video of the affair is posted after the jump.

We'd like to see the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C give it a shot. What would you like to see in the next heat? Treat the comments section as a suggestion box.

UK consortium to develop rare earth-free electric-drive system

Getrag electric drive unit

A group of specialist engineering technology firms is set to embark on the development of next-generation electric-drive systems that do not require rare earth metals. UK-based Sevcon will lead the collaborative project that includes Cummins Generator Technologies and Newcastle University's Power Electronics and Drives Research Group to develop traction drive units for use in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric-only vehicles.

The consortium has secured over £500,000 ($781,050 U.S. at the current exchange rate) in matched funding from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

The team will work on the development of a "no-rare-earth-metals" electric drive system using advanced, switched reluctance motor technology. The group looks to overcome the need for rare earths by developing a technology that uses steel instead of the contested materials. It's anticipated that the consortium-developed traction motors will be ready for volume production within four years.

Most and Least Stolen Vehicles infographic

The Highway Loss Data Institute has rolled out its latest figures on vehicle theft, and the crew from CarBuzz have taken the time to compile a list of the 10 models most and least likely to be stolen based on the number of claims per 1,000 vehicles. It should come as no surprise to hear that the Cadillac Escalade once again takes the honor of the most stolen of them all, followed quickly by a bevy of full-size pickup trucks, including the Ford F-250 Crew 4x4 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew. In fact, the only two cars to break the top 10 most stolen vehicles are the Chrysler 300 at number six and the Chrysler 300 Hemi at number 10.

Meanwhile, the Audi A6 has managed to rank as the least-stolen vehicle, followed by the Mercury Mariner and the Chevrolet Equinox. Surprisingly enough, the Volkswagen CC, Lexus RX 350 and Mini Cooper Clubman all got a nod as grand theft auto untouchables. Hit the jump for a look at the full infographic.

Bradley Smith Signs Three-Year Deal With Tech 3, Will Switch To MotoGP From 2013

Bradley Smith has been a revelation in the 2012 season. After struggling a little in the early part of the year, Smith quickly got the hang of riding a 600cc four stroke, and with the help of his crew chief Tom Jojic, has become a consistent front runner in the Moto2 class.

For a while, Smith was linked to a promotion to the MotoGP class with the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team for next year, but hopes of such a move had faded over recent weeks. But with the announcement yesterday that Bradley Smith would be staying with the Tech 3 team for the next three years, Smith will get his promotion to MotoGP, albeit a year later than planned.

The deal sees Smith commit to Herve Poncharal's Tech 3 team through 2014. Next season, the young Englishman will stay in Moto2 and attempt to win the title in that class - a task that will be made much easier now that Marc Marquez is almost certain to ascend to a MotoGP ride on a Honda next year - after which he will switch to the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team for 2013 and 2014. Smith's ties with Monster will have helped him secure the deal, as the US energy drink have also extended their contract with the Tech 3 MotoGP team for the next three years as well.

The Tech 3 press release announcing Smith's contract appears below:
