Carlos Checa is good around Miller Motorsports Park. It suits his style and it suits his bike. Going into Superpole, he was a firm favourite to be on the front row, along with top qualifiers Jakub Smrz and Tom Sykes. With the morning qualifying starting off cold and damp and the afternoon practice being just as cold, if not as damp, it would be safe to assume that the faster riders in those sessions would do equally as well in Superpole.

Corvette Z06 on HRE Wheels [Photo Gallery]
The all-American sportscar is an icon in its own right, but when fitted with a set of semi-gloss HRE P40SC wheels, the menacing factor is taken to new sporting extremes. Instead of the usual silver cents, the car got a set of red caps to cary the theme in the car’s name.
Now the cou...

Report: Student protests in Montreal threaten Canadian Grand Prix
Filed under: Motorsports, Government/Legal, Canada

As Formula One racing expands around the globe, we've come to expect certain potential disruptions. Demonstrators in Bahrain scuttled last year's grand prix there, and nearly did the same again this year. Violent crime in Brazil has caused some issues at that country's F1 race as well. And over in the rally raid column, threats from al-Qaeda forced the Dakar Rally to move from North Africa to South America. But in Canada? Peaceful, non-threatening Canada?
That's the issue that racers and fans alike could be facing next week as Montreal gears up for the Canadian Grand Prix. You see, F1 racing isn't the only thing taking to the streets of Montreal this summer, as student protests have plagued the city's downtown core in particular. The protests are over proposed tuition hikes for universities in the province of Quebec, sending Montreal's notoriously militant student activists into the streets banging pots and pans, refusing to go back to class and clashing with local police.
The issue has pitted the students against the provincial government and wreaked havoc on businesses in the city's downtown area, but could threaten one of its biggest tourism draws as activists have issued calls to disrupt the grand prix next week. The threat leaves premier Jean Charest, leader of the provincial government that has traditionally enjoyed strong backing from business leaders, in a difficult bargaining position: either give in to the protestors or wait and see what they do when the tourists pour into town for the grand prix.

Alt-fuel cars unsustainable without government assistance
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Legislation and Policy, USA

According to the 2012 U.S. Automotive Industry Survey and Confidence Index by Booz & Co., alternative vehicle powertrains may take up as much as 10 percent of the total market by 2020, but only if the federal government continues to support development.
Without a helping hand from Uncle Sam, only 30 percent of the researchers, executives and consumers who participated in the survey believe alternative-fuel machines will be able to carve out that small slice of the market. Specifically, federal tax incentives for potential buyers could help push the technology forward in the future.
According to Wards Auto, further development faces a double hurdle. First, additional urban planning is required to demonstrate plug-in hybrids and EVs will be viable options for buyers, but at the same time, government agencies also need to see fuel cell and battery costs come down before being willing to pony up for chargers or incentives.
Even so, 70 percent of those surveyed said they were more confident about future hybrid demand than they were in 2011. Take a look at the full survey results here.

Who's ready now? Nissan deploys first of 400 planned DC fast chargers in Europe
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Europe/EU

Nissan has installed the first of 400 quick-charging electric-vehicle chargers in Europe that it's planning to deploy during the next few years, the Detroit News reports.
The Japanese automaker, which along with alliance partner Renault is said to be investing more than $5 billion (U.S.) in electric-vehicle and infrastructure development, will install 40 quick chargers each in France and the Netherlands. Once the Dutch chargers are deployed, all of the country's drivers will be within 20 miles of a Nissan quick charger. The chargers use the CHAdeMO standard and can recharge an EV like a Nissan Leaf to 80 percent capacity within 30 minutes.
Last month, Nissan launched a campaign called "The Big Turn On" that uses social media to entice people to compete for free quick chargers. As part of the contest, the automaker is giving away other prizes ranging from tablet computers to Nissan Leafs.
Nissan said in February that it was looking to sell as many as 2,000 DC quick-charging stations in the U.S. within the next two years, according to Green Car Reports. Nissan said last fall that it would be able to sell quick charging stations for as little as $9,900, which is about half the price of a more typical DC quick-charging station.

Report: Mini planning five-door hatchback for the U.S.

We've all heard the trope that Americans don't like hatchbacks. Despite this, Mini has made a decent living selling its iconic three-door here in the States. The BMW subsidiary has also tried a plethora of permutations to get us Yanks more interested, including two convertibles, a coupe and the van-like Clubman.
But it wasn't until Mini launched the larger Countryman, equipped with four full-size doors, that it seemed to crack the code of the American consumer. In a very short time, the Countryman has become Mini's second-best seller in the U.S. behind the standard three-door despite its significantly higher, and more profitable, price.
What does that tell Mini? According to Motoringfile.com, that Americans like having more doors to open. The Mini-focused website reports that the automaker is developing a five-door hatchback to launch with the next-generation model in the U.S. and other markets.
Motoringfile.com says the five-door hatch, codenamed F55, will only be around two inches longer than the three-door to give rear seat passengers a bit more legroom. The front doors will reportedly be shortened to accommodate the extra two behind them, and all four will feature standard door handles. While the five-door Mini will look just like its three-door counterpart up front, Motoringfile.com says to expect a more sharply raked rear end.
Given Mini's rapid and recent lineup expansion, we're surprised they hadn't struck upon this rather obvious iteration of the basic Mini formula earlier. Better late than never, though, for those who've always wanted a traditional Mini but needed more practically to pull the trigger.

Driving an EV is like paying a buck a gallon, eternally
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, MPG, USA

For those nostalgic for mullets, the Cosby Show and Oakland A's dominance, the Nissan Leaf may be for you.
Those late 1980s hallmarks harken back to the days of $1-a-gallon gas, and that's what you're in for - forever - if you drive a battery electric vehicle, says Green Car Reports, citing a study from Natural Resources Defense Council staff member Max Baumhefner.
Baumhefner found that, while oil and gas prices fluctuate because of various supply shocks and political shenanigans, electricity prices stay relatively constant, meaning that the cost of juicing up an EV isn't going to change much. Additionally, our friends at Green Car Reports found a Union of Concerned Scientists study that estimated that EV drivers can save as much as $1,200 a year in the form of lower refueling costs when compared to gassing up conventional vehicles.
Either way, the study addresses the very topical issue about how much more it costs to buy an plug-in vehicle or a hybrid, and how quickly it takes to pay off the extra chunk of cash in the form of refueling savings. The subject is topical enough for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to launch a new webpage on FuelEconomy.gov to calculate how long it takes to pay off the higher price tag of most hybrids (electric vehicles haven't yet been added to that page). Many of the better-selling hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, take about five years to pay off, while hybrid SUVs often take about half that time because of the more drasctic savings compared to the their gas-guzzling counterparts.
