Video: Ferrari F12 races Air Malta A320 jet
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Videos, Ferrari, Luxury

Air Malta recently worked up a little stunt that pitted an Airbus A320 against a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in a drag race to raise funds for charity. It's easy to forget just how quick something the size of a jetliner can be, but watching the video below shows us just where the big passenger aircraft stands when it comes to sprinting down a runway. We won't spoil the clip for you, you'll just have to check out the showdown below.
Air Malta says it raised over 178,820 euro with the stunt, which is around $230,000. That's despite the fact that intermittent rain showers kept crowds away. Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton even stopped by to say "Hi" to the crowds. He wasn't piloting the F12, however. Check out the video below for yourself.

Nissan adds 2013 Titan to gearshift recall
Filed under: Truck, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Work, Nissan

Nissan has added the 2013 Titan to the list of vehicles recalled over potential gearshift issues. Just a few days ago, the automaker recalled nearly 20,000 NV Vans for a problem with the shift lever assembly that could cause the gear selector to read inaccurately. Now Nissan is recalling certain 2013 Titan pickup trucks manufactured between December 17, 2012 and February 20, 2013 and equipped with column-mounted shift levers, though for a different fault. The pickups were built using certain chemicals that could cause the brake-shift interlock mechanism to fail over time. If that happens, the truck could be shifted out of Park without the driver's foot on the brake.
As a result, the truck could roll away and cause an accident or injury. Nissan says it will remedy the fault free of charge. Owners can expect to be notified once the campaign begins on or around April 8. You can read the full National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice below for more information.

New York: 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid finally adds gas-electric option to the brand [w/video]
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Hybrid, Crossover, Subaru

For a company that does a pretty great job of tying its vehicles to the environment - or, better said, to people who like to actually get out into the environment - Subaru hasn't exactly been a leader in green vehicle production. In fact, it's 2013 and the company is finally releasing its first-ever production hybrid, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Tom Doll, Subaru's executive vice president, admitted as much at the unveiling today at the New York Auto Show: "We at Subaru were not the first to market with a hybrid, but we sure made sure we did it right."
That may be, but for now the automaker doesn't want to tell us all the details of how right it is. We do know that the powertrain takes Subaru's 2.0-liter boxer engine and adds in a 13.4-horsepower electric motor and continuously variable transmission. All-wheel drive will be, of course, standard, and Subaru promises the XV Crosstrek Hybrid will offer the "same utility and versatility as the gasoline model," including 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The hybrid does weigh 300 pounds more, though, which required a re-engineered chassis.
The motor can move the lifted Impreza in all-electric mode up to 25 miles an hour (distance not specified). Subaru isn't talking precise fuel economy numbers, either, just that it will be the "most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossover in America" and will unsurprisingly have start-stop functionality. We do hear, though, that the hybrid will get around 10-percent better fuel economy than the standard gas-only XV Crosstrek. The most efficient version of that car, the one with the CVT, gets 25 miles per gallon in the city, 33 highway and 28 combined. Whatever this hybrid XV Crosstrek gets, we expect Subaru'll sell a million in Portlandia. For more, scroll down to watch an official video and read the press release.

Report: Bankrupt A123 changes name to B456 PDQ
Filed under: Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials

Ok, so we made the "PDQ" part up, but battery maker A123 Systems, Inc. has changed its name to B456 Systems, Inc. - and no, this is not an early April Fool's Day joke. As part of A123's bankruptcy proceedings dating to last October, it was required to change its name in order to be purchased by Chinese company Wanxiang. According to the Detroit Free Press, as part of a March 22, 2013 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, A123 declared that

New York: 2014 Dodge Durango bows with eight-speed auto, updated looks [w/video]
Filed under: New York Auto Show, SUV, Videos, Crossover, Dodge

Dodge has significantly updated its full-size Durango for the 2014 model year, giving the seven-passenger hauler a fresh look and a well-rounded boost of competitive features as it enters its fourth year in the showroom.
Cosmetically, it is hard to miss the revised front end with projector-beam headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, "floating" crosshair grille, a taller front bumper and a new lower fascia. The rear end of the facelifted Durango has been redesigned with the automaker's now-signature LED "racetrack" taillamps and resculpted rear fascia. All of the wheels are new too, with 18- and 20-inch options for each trim level with a variety of factory finishes.
Inside the cabin, buyers can select the automaker's latest Uconnect infotainment system with a full suite of infotainment features and connectivity accessed through an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Other optional goodies include a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seating and a Blu-Ray player capable of running unique programs on the twin individual rear monitors.
Mechanically speaking, Dodge has fitted an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment to both the 3.6-liter V6 (290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque) and the optional 5.7-liter V8 (360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque) which should improve both performance and economy. As an added benefit, the Pentastar V6 now boasts a best-in-class driving range of more than 600 miles on one tank of fuel, but thus far, Dodge isn't discussing much in the way of additional performance metrics, saying only that the Pentastar should get 25 miles per gallon on the highway cycle.
We've only touched the tip of the iceberg in terms of new features, so scroll down to watch an official video and see the full press release for all of the details.

New York: BMW 3-cylinder prototype engine sits pretty in 1 Series, will be better in i8 plug-in hybrid
Filed under: Biodiesel, Diesel, EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, BMW, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, New York Auto Show

The fact that the brand-new prototype three-cylinder, 1.5-liter gasoline engine from BMW finds itself in a 1 Series is almost accidental. Heidelinde Holzer, who works on powertrain predevelopment, powertrain functions and powertrain integration, told AutoblogGreen her team simply took the cars that were available. After all, when you're working on engines that are not destined to go into any vehicles in the near future - this has been a four-year project already - it's okay to test them in whatever mule you've got access to. The first production vehicle that will use the three-cylinder is the upcoming i8 plug-in hybrid, which isn't going to arrive until the first half of 2014. BMW didn't allow us to play around in one of those, so we had to make due with our 1 Series prototype test drives yesterday at BMW's Woodcliff Lake, NJ, headquarters.
Under a sky that alternated between bright and threatening-to-rain, two red 1 Series zipped around the BMW campus - we were not allowed to take them on public roads - between technical sessions about the engine, the upcoming four-cylinder 328d diesel and BMW's new suite of apps. According to what we saw, future Bimmers are going to get a lot more efficient and a whole lot more connected.

New York: Nissan NV200 Mobility Taxi adds a dose of accessibility to the new-look cab
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Hybrid, Minivan/Van, Work, Nissan, Electric

Nissan has been making hay with its NV200 light commercial vehicle in New York. We've known since last year that the van will see service as a taxi in the Big Apple, and more recently, we learned that a variant will be kicking around to rescue ailing Gibson guitars. At its press conference this year, Nissan continued the onslaught with a wheelchair-accessible version of its NV200 Taxi.
The automaker has teamed with BraunAbility - a company that styles itself as the world's largest maker of wheelchair-accessible vans - to create this NV200 Mobility Taxi. The cab features a fold-flat ramp for rearward wheelchair accessibility, as well as a restraint system to keep said chair snugly in place at speed.
In addition to showing off the Mobility Taxi, Nissan announced at its press conference that it will be making both hybrid and fully electric versions of the NV200 Taxi available, as well. Scroll down for the Nissan press release, or take some time with our extensive live and stock image galleries of the NV200 Mobility Taxi.

Official: Nissan Leaf sales will hit new record in March, around 1,900 units
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, New York Auto Show

During a side session at the New York Auto Show today, José Muñoz, the senior vice president for sales and marketing, US and Canada, for Nissan, revealed that the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle is having a tremendous sales month. The company doesn't yet know the specific number - there are a few selling days left, after all - but it appears that over 1,900 Leafs will be sold this month.
That means that March 2013 marks the new high-water point for the world's best-selling EV. Previously, the best sales month was June 2011, when Nissan sold 1,708 Leafs.
The new record is due mostly to cost savings Nissan has realized by starting to build the Leaf in Smyrna, TN instead of shipping it over from Japan. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn remained completely confident in his electric vehicle strategy, which we will detail a bit later. For now, though, with record Leaf numbers and Tesla delivering 500 Model S vehicles a week, electric vehicles appear to be finding an audience well beyond those early adopters who bought in when the Leaf was released in late 2010 - or the Roadster before that.

Guest Blog: Mat Oxley: Crutchlow on top as MotoGP testing ends
MotoMatters.com is delighted to feature the work of iconic MotoGP writer Mat Oxley. Oxley is a former racer, TT winner and highly respected author of biographies of world champions Mick Doohan and Valentino Rossi, and currently writes for Motor Sport Magazine, where he is MotoGP correspondent. We will be featuring sections of Oxley's blogs, posted in full on the Motor Sport Magazine website, over the coming months.
When someone once congratulated Eddie Lawson for being fastest in practice, the four-time 500 World Champion shrugged his shoulders and said “you don’t get points for practice”. He was right, of course, and it’s the same with testing: no points, no prize money, no nothing, save for a faint feeling of satisfaction.
Certainly, Cal Crutchlow must have left Jerez on Monday evening wearing a faint glimmer of a smile on his face after topping the final pre-season tests.

Official: BMW confirms i3 range extender "not intended for daily use"

It's no secret that the BMW i3 has a spot in the powertrain bay reserved for a gasoline engine range extender. Given that the i3 city car is available as a pure electric vehicle, how does an additional liquid fuel powerplant fit into the picture? Green Car Reports recently wondered out loud about this very thing, and that prompted us to ask BMW directly. Turns out, opting for the peace of mind that, to some, gasoline offers will indeed give you more range, but it won't allow the i3 to make the drive from South Carolina to Southern California.
David Buchko, BMW advanced powertrain and heritage communications, told AutoblogGreen that:
The exact, official electric range of the i3 has not yet been announced. Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Maximilian Kellner, head of product management of BMW i division, said, "The i3 has a range on a single electrical charge of 130 to 160 kilometers [81-100 miles], but with two eco modes the EV range could grow to 220 kilometers [137 miles]."The i3 range extender is meant to enable the car to go a little further than the pure BEV on those rare occasions when driver needs to go a little further. It is not intended for daily use. We've said that the REx [range extender] will double the effective range of 80-100 miles. I have not seen anything to suggest that it would not be capable of doing so.
If you've been eying the i3 and its best-of-both-worlds powertrain, now you've got a bit more information to go on as you plan your purchase. The i3 launches later this year.

Just 100 examples of the FBWE 6er will be produced, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars in the mix, for starting prices of $106,995 and $110,095, respectively (both prices include $895 in destination and handling charges).

Official: Tesla delivering 500 Model S EVs a week; now showing off in Japan, elsewhere
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors

You don't deliver 500 expensive, luxury electric vehicles by thinking small. To wit, the Tesla Model S, which Tesla announced today has reached that refined level - and that the global rollout continues. Now, 500 deliveries a week does not mean Tesla is taking 500 new orders a week - the company doesn't release monthly sales numbers like most other automakers, just quarterly, and then indirectly - but it does indicate that the previous self-limitation of building just 400 a week is crumbling.
Most Model S deliveries are in California (surprise! Just kidding), where Tesla customers have now registered over 3,000 units. Again, we don't know the monthly sales, but in the fourth quarter of 2012, Tesla sold around 2,400 Model S EVs in total. Tesla has talked about overseas sales before, and a new blog post by George Blankenship, the vice president of worldwide sales and ownership experience, gives fresh details about the Model S now officially being a "World Car." It was recently on display in Kyoto (above) as part of the Get Amped International Tour. Similar to the US version, this tour offers test drives in Europe and Asia.
Back in the US, Tesla is talking about more Superchargers, indicating that new units will soon (i.e., within the next three to four months) be coming to the Pacific Northwest, Texas, Illinois, and Florida. The current networks in the northeast and California will also be expanded - something that could have avoided Tesla a lot of hassle recently.
