BMW adds hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to Spartanburg facility

plug power logoBMW used to regularly tout its hydrogen-powered 7 Series until that program was killed in late 2009. The Hydrogen 7 used H2 in an internal combustion engine and when BMW said it was done making the car, it said it would focus its hydrogen efforts on fuel cells. There's no news of a new H2-powered Bimmer to report, but BMW Manufacturing has announced that it is using vehicles (forklifts, tuggers and stackers) powered by hydrogen fuel cells at its Spartanburg, SC plant. Specifically, BMW is using the vehicles to assemble the new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle and the plant will have six on-site refueling stations for the vehicles. The hydrogen will be made by Linde at "the most sustainable source within Linde's network."

With this move, BMW joins companies like Nissan, Toyota and Wal-Mart in the hydrogen forklift game. BMW will use 86 GenDrive fuel cell units made by Plug Power in "class-1 sit-down counterbalance, class-2 reach and class-3 rider pallet trucks." There, now you know a little bit more about factory vehicle nomenclature. Thanks to Roy B. for the tip!
