Donington Added To 2011 World Superbikes Calendar

After the debacle at Donington, where an overly ambitious plan to raise 130 million Pounds Sterling to modify the track to host Formula One was launched shortly before the credit crunch sent the global economy on a downward spiral, it was feared that international motorcycle racing would never return to the Leicestershire track. The company that was running the track was basically penniless, parts of the track had been already dug up, and East Midlands airport, which sits at one end of the track, was eying the track for extra space to expand into.

But with the track lease now back in the hands of the Wheatcroft family, who own the circuit, things have turned around at Donington. The Midlands' circuit has been brought quickly back up to standard, hosting several local car and motorcycle events, and is now ready to make a return to the international stage. That will take place on March 27th, 2011, when the World Superbike series returns to Donington for the European round of the 13 weekend series. The Wheatcroft family and Infront Motor Sports signed an agreement which will see WSBK race at Donington for the 2011 season, giving the UK two rounds of World Superbikes, along with the Silverstone round on July 31st.

Latest 2011 Moto2 Line-Up: West, Talmacsi, Fores All Confirmed

The Moto2 rider line-up for 2011 is slowly starting to take something resembling its final shape, with more and more riders signing contracts to ride next year. Kenan Sofuoglu's signing for the Technomag CIP squad provided one catalyst, provoking a spate of moves to secure the known quantities for next season at the Valencia test. The prime mover in that chase was the team that Sofuoglu turned down, with Gresini securing former Tech 3 rider Yuki Takahashi to take the place of the departing Moto2 champion Toni Elias, with Sofuoglu's former Ten Kate Honda World Supersport teammate Michele Pirro taking the second seat in the biggest team in Moto2.

The Tech 3 team had earlier announced the signing of Bradley Smith and Frenchman Mike di Meglio to take the place of the departing Yuki Takahashi and the disappointing Raffaele de Rosa - the Italian being tipped for a return to the 125cc class, along with Hector Faubel (signed for Bancaja Aspar), Joan Olive and Sergio Gadea. Meanwhile, the other hottest seat in Moto2 - the one left vacant by Di Meglio - has been filled by one of the two riders making the jump from the Spanish CEV Moto2 championship, Xavi Fores signing with the Mapfre Aspar team for 2011, joining his CEV Moto2 rival Kev Coghlan on the world stage.

2011 Chevy Volt gets 93 mpge (and 37 mpg and 60 mpg) rating from EPA

After yesterday's 99 miles per gallon (equivalent) EPA rating for the Nissan Leaf, General Motors must've been eager to get the numbers for the Chevy Volt from the government - if for no other reason than because these efficiency stickers are the last thing holding up deliveries of the first production vehicles. Today, GM shared the official numbers with the world, and they range from 37 miles per gallon to 93 mpge (equivalent) combined to 60 mpg "composite." Sixty mpg composite is a "combined, combined" number, and will be completely different for everyone. You might want to think of it as a lifetime figure, since if figures in both electricity and gasoline consumed. Oh, and it's also best in class for compact cars. The Volt's official electric-only range will be 35 miles, but GM, like Nissan, has been giving a range recently of 25-50 miles recently. The Volt now has an official total range of 379 miles, with 344 miles of that being extended range (i.e., gas) driving. As Tony DiSalle, Chevrolet product marketing director, said, "If you try to boil it down to a single number, it gets quite difficult."

Doug Parks, Chevrolet Volt Global Vehicle Line Executive, said he is "quite pleased" with the numbers and understands that it is a complicated story to tell. GM and the EPA worked together to come up with this label to figure in all of the different modes that impact the vehicle's efficiency. We've heard that the 2011 Volt will have a temporary EPA label, but Parks told AutoblogGreen that what you see above will likely be what we see next year:
Our intent was not to do something that was a one-year deal. Our hope is that this is very similar to the path that everyone will go down in the future. We tried to make the label look as similar as it can to next year.
So, what about that "230 mpg" GM touted last year. Well, that was a different way to calculate things. "230 by itself was never intended to be a composite number," Parks said.

Neste Oil fires up world's largest renewable diesel plant in Singapore

Neste Oil fired up what's being hailed as the world's largest renewable diesel plant in Singapore. The facility, which will ramp up production of NExBTL renewable diesel fuel on a phase-by-phase basis, was completed, are you ready for this, "on schedule and on budget." The Singapore site, which costs nearly $550 million to build, has enough capacity to pump out 800,000 tons of the synthetic diesel annually.

Neste's NExBTL fuel is said to be compatible with with all existing diesel engines without requiring any modifications. The renewable fuel offers excellent performance in cold climates and, if need be, can be blended in with traditional diesel. Neste claims that the production and use of NExBTL, "enables a 40-80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to be achieved compared to fossil diesel," adding that burning the fuel creates "lower tailpipe emissions," thus "enhancing overall air quality." Neste is constructing a similar plant, slated for completion in 2011, in the Netherlands and already operates two renewable diesel facilities in Porvoo, Finland. Hat tip to Mike!

General Motors opens company's first flexi-engine plant in India

GM employees complete build of first engine at powertrain plant in Talegaon

General Motors has inaugurated its first-ever flexi-engine plant. The facility, located in Talegaon, India, is a unique powertrain production plant that enables the manufacturing of gasoline and diesel engines simultaneously. GM invested $230 million to construct the flexi-engine facility, which has an initial annual production capacity of 160,000 engines and is designed to accommodate future expansion. The plant will produce diesel and gasoline mills for Indian-market versions of the Chevrolet Spark, Beat, Captiva, Optra, Cruze, Aveo, Aveo U-VA and Tavera.

Karl Slym, president and managing director of GM India, spoke of the adaptability of the engine plant in Talegaon, stating:
The plant has capacity to churn out engines with a maximum capacity of 1.5 liters for cars. More importantly, the new plant will ensure there is a flexibility as far as manufacturing of engines is concerned. The permutations and combinations for engine production can be varied between the existing petrol and diesel engine lines.
In the ever-changing automotive industry, flexibility is the name of the game.

Chrysler confirms $843M investment in Kokomo, IN plants

Sergio Marchionne at the Kokomo, IN plant

Sergio Marchionne stopped by Chrysler's transmission manufacturing facilities in Kokomo, Indiana and delivered some good news. The Chrysler Group plans to invest $843 million into the plants to modernize them and prepare for the production of a new front-wheel drive automatic transmission. This pushes the automakers total investment dollars near the $3 billion mark, dating back to June of 2009, with $1.1 billion of that earmarked specifically for the Kokomo facilities. More importantly, this announcement should have 2,250 employees breathing a little easier because it allows their jobs to be retained.

We know Chrysler is getting ready to launch its eight-speed transmission, but this new transmission in development has yet to be revealed.
"For years, Kokomo has been at the center of our powertrain strategy and the potential of an additional investment reaffirms that position," said Sergio Marchionne, CEO, Chrysler Group LLC. "When introduced, this new front-wheel drive transmission, along with the previously announced eight-speed transmission we will also produce in Kokomo, will transform our future products and position them as leaders in marketplace. With the promise of investing more than $1 billion into our Kokomo facilities within the last six months, we are demonstrating our commitment to this community and our dedicated workforce. We appreciate the support of the UAW and the City of Kokomo, and look forward to continuing a partnership that will see the Chrysler Group once again become a successful and competitive enterprise."
New transmissions, more stable jobs and a new Charger? 2011 is certainly shaping up to be brighter than last year for the Pentastar.
