Volkswagen Passat CC BlueMotion
Volkswagen has applied some eco tweaks to enhance the fuel economy of both the Passat CC and Scirocco models sold in the UK. Marketed under the umbrella term "BlueMotion Technology" (seen also in the branding of the Golf Blue-e-motion), Volkswagen's new Passat CC and Scirocco variants, "combine efficiency with comfort and refinement to create cars that deliver greater economy and fewer emissions, yet which remain conventional to drive, service and maintain."
The BlueMotion-outfitted Passat CC features a 138 horsepower 2.0-liter TDI engine equipped with stop-start technology. Regenerative braking is part of the eco package, as is a standard six-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy numbers for the BlueMotion model ring in at 60.1 miles per gallon (50.0 U.S.) and CO2 emissions register at 125 grams per kilometer, compared to 50.4 mpg (42.0 U.S.) and 146 g/km for the non-BlueMotion model.
All Scirocco models equipped with the 138-hp diesel mill receive improvements, including the addition of stop-start technology and regenerative braking. Before the modifications, the Scirocco was rated at 55.4 mpg (46.1 U.S.) and CO2 was listed at 134 g/km on models equipped with the six-speed row-your-own gearbox. After the tweaks, the Scirocco's mpg rating soars to 62.8 (52.3 U.S.) while its CO2 emissions plummet to 118 g/km. Volkswagen, with this latest pair of BlueMotion models, shows us that technology, bordering on the simpler side, can be used to achieve added high efficiency at a minimal cost.
