Rendered Speculation: 2013 Nissan 370Z goes hybrid

The good people of Road & Track have gone through the trouble of rendering the next-generation Nissan Z for everyone's viewing pleasure, and if their take on the vehicle is anything close to the mark, we can expect a much more streamlined appearance from the sports car in the near future. In addition to the more aerodynamic look, R&T reports that Nissan may equip the future Z with a hybrid drivetrain to both increase performance and reduce fuel consumption at the same time. A battery pack would also go a long way toward curbing the vehicle's emissions.

If the engineers behind the 2013 Z decide to go that route, R&T says that we can likely expect to see the same running gear under the hood as currently found in the Infiniti M hybrid. That means a 3.5-liter V6 working in concert with an electric motor to produce a combined 360 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. That line of thought is bolstered by rumor of a hybrid-drivetrain Z test mule buzzing around the U.S. at the moment, and in that configuration, the publication says that the Z should be good for close to 30 mpg. We're guessing it won't have any trouble getting out of its own way, either.

New Ford Focus Rated at 40 MPG

The puzzle that has been the new Ford Focus, with its very slow unveiling, is now complete, after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued its report regarding the model.

According to the EPA, the Focus is capable of achieving a fuel economy of 40 mpg (5.88l/100 km). The rating, valid for the Focus with the SFE (Super Fuel Economy) package and a six-speed automatic transmission, makes the model the fourth in the Ford line-up to become a serious contender on the segment.

We mentioned last weekend that German niche sports car manufacturer Wiesmann was bringing a new concept to Geneva to gauge interest in a possible production version, and here it is. At the 8th Annual Global Green USA pre-Oscar party held in Hollywood, CA last Wednesday, celebrities arrived in style and many of them lined up for a photo op with General Motors' star of the green carpet: the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The list of A-list celebs caught on camera posing with Chevy's plug-in hybrid included director James Cameron and actor Dennis Hasbert.

Actors making friends with snazzy "green" cars on film got a kick start when Leonardo DiCaprio rolled up at the Oscars in a Toyota Prius a few years ago. Since then, numerous celebs seeking to expose their "greenness" have been caught on camera seated behind the wheel of a hybrid vehicle, some of them boldly driving a not-so-green gas-electric Cadillac Escalade hybrid.

Though some might credit the Prius with launching Hollywood's gotta-drive-something-green revolution, the question now seems to be: will the Chevy Volt, or maybe even the Nissan Leaf, knock the Prius out of the spotlight? We'll find out tomorrow night.

Ethanol loses big supporter in Congress; Iowa Sen. Grassley ready to "bite the bullet"

Up for vote in the U.S. Senate is a deficit-cutting bill already passed by the House of Representatives that will curb federal spending by $60 billion this year while also preventing the EPA from increasing the percentage of ethanol in gasoline from 10 percent to 15 percent and handing out subsidies for gasoline stations being retrofitted to sell the E15 blend. The combination is creating some interesting political conflicts.

Long-time biofuel supporter Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, for example, has had to publicly restate his priorities: cutting the national deficit now comes before support for the ethanol industry. He told the Des Moines Register, "As significant as it is to me because I'm a great ethanol fan, if in fact those things were in the bill to cut the deficit... I'd have to bite the bullet." That is a pretty significant statement, especially considering that Iowa is responsible for about 30 percent of America's ethanol production. By contrast, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin along with the state's two House Republicans oppose the ethanol provisions. According to Harkin, "Blocking funding for expanding ethanol use to E15 blends not only does not save any significant funding, it takes us backwards on energy security by making us more dependent on foreign imports."

Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis thinks Congressional support for ethanol is faltering due to anti-ethanol campaigns that claim ethanol production is to blame for rising food prices. Maybe, but a lot of Republicans like Grassley are being pushed from the right to make the budget the political issue, and some ethanol support might be one casuality of that push.

The second of the pre-season tests at the Malaysian Sepang International Circuit was brought to a close today after three dry and hot days of running, despite rain threatening the final 45minutes of Thursday.

The track temperature reached a high of 57 degrees Celsius, and the fastest times on each day were set in the cooler morning or late afternoon runs. The third and final day of the test was the fastest overall, with the leading Repsol Honda duo of Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa both lapping the 5.5km circuit in under two minutes. The top three riders also each lapped quicker than the official circuit best lap of 2m 00.518s, set by Valentino Rossi in 2009.

2012 BMW 650i Convertible configurator comes online

The new-for-2012 BMW 650i Convertible is still bigger and heavier than most of the competition, but there are still a whole slew of notable new features about the updated car. Designers filed off some of the more audacious curves in favor of a bit more subtlety. Power from the 650i's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 now sits at 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque - up 40 hp and a whopping 90 lb-ft from the last-gen 6 Series - and the six-speed gearbox has been replaced with a slick eight-speed unit. All good stuff, and judging by the fact that BMW has launched the online 650i Convertible configurator, it appears this big droptop is ready for prime time.

The price tag begins at $92,375 once $875 is added for destination and the dreaded $1,000 gas guzzler tax is applied. The price only goes up from there, with packages like Driver Assistance ($3,900) and premium sound ($1,800) bringing things over the $100,000 mark. Check off all the options and you're looking at a MSRP of $110,375, or enough money for a loaded 550i and a nicely optioned Mazda Miata.
