Last October, BMW on Demand was launched, marking the automaker's entry into the car-sharing industry to compete with the likes of Zipcar and Daimler's Car2Go. However, unlike Zipcar and Car2Go, BMW on Demand offers access to all of the automaker's vehicles, including asphalt terrors like the M3 and M6. Expanding upon the principles behind BMW on Demand, the automaker, with assistance from Sixt AG, recently launched the DriveNow car-sharing program.

DriveNow is a car-sharing venture that will be offered in Munich, Germany this April and, later, in Berlin. BMW and Sixt, under the joint venture name of DriveNow, intend to offer fuel-efficient premium vehicles that can be hired and dropped off "wherever the customer needs them," according to BMW. The German automaker will provide the vehicles, while Sixt will pitch in its car-sharing know-how and networking capabilities.

As for pricing, BMW says that users will pay a one-time registration fee of 29 euros ($41 U.S. at the current exchange rate) and 29 cents per minute of use. This per-minute rate includes any fees associated with parking and covers the cost of fuel for the vehicle.

BMW hopes to offer DriveNow in more European cities in the future and even says that taking this car-sharing scheme to the international level is a possibility. But it all starts in Munich, where BMW will keep it simple by offering DriveNow members access to two models; the Mini Cooper and the BMW 1-Series. Hop the jump to catch a clip of BMW's DriveNow car-sharing program.
