Video: Motor Trend pits Cadillac CTS-V vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG in wagon-off
Filed under: Performance, Wagon, Videos, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

Station wagons, as pointed out by ex-Autoblogger Jonny Lieberman, are boring. "It's the penalty you pay for falling in love and having children," he says.
Sure, just so long as your children like to go fast, at least when the chosen conveyance to move those booster seats from Point A to Point B is either the wagon version of the Cadillac CTS-V or Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, as tested by Motor Trend in the video you'll see after the break.
Without spoiling any of the salient details, we'll say that one car was a wee bit quicker, crossing the finish line a scant 79 feet ahead of its rival after a half-mile of acceleration to speeds surpassing 150 miles per hour, while the other was deemed the overall better car for enthusiast drivers.
Which was which? See the video below for all the answers you crave, along with some brilliant exhaust notes from these two rare wagon-shaped beasts.

Gresini CRT Shakedown Comes To An Early End
The San Carlo Gresini Honda team have called an early halt to their shakedown test of the FTR Honda CRT bike Michele Pirro will be contesting the MotoGP series with this season. On the second day of testing, Pirro ran into a problem with the belly of the fairing grounding at certain sections of the track, according to GPOne.com. After trying to address the problem via setup, it became clear that physical changes to the bike would be needed and the Gresini team decided to call it a day.
Such problems are normal for such a new bike, Fausto Gresini told GPOne.com. The very reason for holding a shakedown test is to find problems such as these, he said. Solving them in time for the Jerez test due to start on Friday will be difficult, however. British chassis builder FTR, who built and designed the chassis and bodywork for the bike, have just a few days to modify the bodywork to prevent it from grounding, and it is unclear whether they will be able to fix the problem by Friday.
Video: Are you the next Lexus LS?
Filed under: Sedan, Videos, Lexus, Design/Style, Luxury

We hope you like the look of the new Lexus GS. The Japanese luxury automaker has made it clear it aims to spread the new "spindle" grille found on the sedan across the brand. During an interview with Takayuki Katsuda, chief engineer for the RX line, four teaser images were splashed across the screen, including what looks to be the next-generation LS. If that's true, the model will wear a heavily accented version of the Predator maw, complete with a chrome or brushed metal accent frame. Likewise, the headlamps will boast metal (or metal-effect) trim work of their own, complete with a dual-projector array.
Other reports have indicated the teaser may hint to what buyers can expect to see from the LS 600h F Sport when the model arrives.
In addition to the LS teaser, the video also flashes a brief glimpse at vehicles like the GS 450h, CT 200h F Sport and the upcoming ES. Hit the jump to take a look for yourself.

Interview: FTR's Mark Taylor on Aerodynamics and Air Intakes
The following interview was conducted with Mark Taylor of FTR Moto2 early in 2011. MotoMatters.com visited FTR's factory in Buckingham last year and spoke to Taylor about the development of the British Moto2 chassis builder's radically revised fairing, and the role of computational fluid dynamics in designing and verifying the aero packages of racing motorcycles. Taylor and FTR graciously discussed their work in some depth, and offered us a glimpse into exactly what goes into designing a racing motorcycle.
When the 2011 FTR Moto2 machine made its debut at the Valencia Moto2 tests at the start of last year, the one thing that caught the eye was the seemingly huge circular air intake on the front of the bike. The large hole, quickly dubbed "the gaping maw", was a radical departure from the current paddock fashion of letterbox-style air intakes, with long, thin, and often nipped in the middle the shape gracing most racing motorcycles at present.
So why did FTR decide to buck the trend and go with the great big hole on the front of the fairing? We spoke to FTR's engineering guru Mark Taylor at the Moto2 chassis manufacturer's Buckinghamshire base and put exactly that question to him.

GM opposes Washington State's proposed electric vehicle fee that has "no merit"
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, GM, Legislation and Policy

General Motors has gone on record to oppose a Washington State bill that would impose a fee of $100 per year to electric-vehicle drivers.
GM Regional Director Howard Lenox, Jr. wrote a letter on March 6 to Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire stating that the automaker, which makes the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in hybrid, is against such a bill. The state is proposing the fee as a way for EV drivers to compensate for the gas taxes that they otherwise wouldn't be paying. The letter was posted on GM's The Future Is Electric blog.
"A fee which singles out electric vehicles will be a disincentive to the growth of the electric vehicle market in Washington State," Lenox wrote in the letter. "As a practical matter, there are so few vehicles on Washington's roads today that their impact in replacing fuel tax revenues will, for now, be negligible."
While drivers of the Volt wouldn't be subject to such a fee because its on-board generator is gas-powered, GM appears to be looking ahead as the automaker looks to electrify more of its fleet to meet more stringent greenhouse-gas emissions requirements.
Last month, Washington State passed Senate Bill 5251, which was introduced by Mary Haugen, the Senate's transportation committee chairwoman. The fee, which is subject to a vote by the state's House of Representatives, is estimated to add as much as $1.9 million to the state's coffers by 2017. Arizona, Oregon and Kansas are among other states looking at instituting fees that specifically target electric vehicle drivers.

New EV motor from Mitsubishi Electric increases efficiency, reduces size
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Mitsubishi

Batteries are usually the focus of technological advances when it comes to electric vehicles, but a new product announcement by Mitsubishi Electric reminds us that is not the only EV element that can be improved. The company has unveiled a new motor design that integrates the inverter - the electronics that regulate the flow of electricity between battery pack and motor - reducing the footprint of the drivetrain and freeing up space in a vehicle's architecture for passenger and cargo.
While less weight and size is pretty cool in itself, the new design doesn't stop there. Using silicon carbide (SiC) in place of silicon-based chips, it cuts energy losses by more than half. Traditionally, silicon has been used for power-switching chips but SiC is more resistant to heat, so thinner chips can be used. Less material means less electrical resistance which means less energy loss.
These innovations, in addition to earlier
