Look, it's the first electric car charger that makes us think of a lightsaber. What you see above is the new 25-foot long "convenience cord" that Ford will make available with the upcoming Focus Electric. The cord is designed to be kept in the car (in a "designated spot" in the trunk) and used to get 120V charging when you're out and about. Ford unveiled the cord today and confirmed to AutoblogGreen that it will come standard with the vehicle.
When the Focus Electric arrives in late 2011, the convenience cord is meant to support an optional 240V home charger for the 100-mile range electric car. Charge times over 120V will be about 12 hours, compared to six-to-eight with a 240V system. Ford says it worked with Yazaki to create a handle that draws inspiration from "hockey sticks, curling irons and tennis racket handles," but we still see a little bit of Count Dooku's lightsaber in there, even if a Sith Lord would scoff at ergonomic factors like, "a matte-finished blue rubber that allows for a comfortable, non-slip grip."
