Senna documentary debuts at Sundance

When Ayrton Senna died at 34, he left a gaping hole in a sport that's cherished by tens of millions around the world. Seventeen years later, the documentary about his life entitled Senna has finally been shown to crowds at the Sundance Film Festival after a long gestation period, and the early reviews are glowing.
Screenwriter and Executive Producer Manish Pandey shared with the Sundance audience that he already showed the film to Ron Dennis, current chairman of McLaren Automotive and former boss of the successful McLaren Formula One racing team. Dennis is a tough man, known for being emotionless and extremely efficient with his time. However, after watching Senna, Dennis reportedly cried for 10 minutes and then spent the next two hour discussing the most un-tamed racing driver the world has ever known.
Follow the jump to watch a trailer for the film. With any luck, this documentary's showing at Sundance has already bagged it a distributor for wider release in the U.S.

Man tattooes 'Mini' on his penis to win free Cooper
Filed under: Etc., Mini, Humor

Think about the craziest thing you would do to win a free car. Andreas Muller of Germany has you beat. Muller really - really - wanted to win the Mini Cooper being given away by his local radio station, and in order to do so, he had the word "MINI" tattoed on his mini, err... penis.
Organizers of the stunt received a long list of crazy ideas, yet Muller's stood out for the sheer ballsiness (pun intended). His screams of pain were broadcast over the air as the tattoo was applied to his now-sponsored manhood.
There's plenty that we'd do to win a free Mini, but this one reaches far beyond the realm of consideration. Thanks for the tip, Steve!

Ford details Powershift transmission for 2012 Focus
Filed under: Technology, Ford

The 2012 Ford Focus is an exciting piece of machinery for a variety of reasons. It puts the Focus on equal footing across the globe, along with being a stylish and well-equipped compact that should be an entertaining steer. On that last bit, Ford is hyping some of the new driver-centric technologies under the Focus' skin, beginning with the PowerShift dry-clutch six-speed automatic with its Torque Hole Filling Technology (THF). What's that? Ford's glad you asked...
When you're driving along in a car equipped with a traditional automatic transmission, you get a momentary lag after an upshift. This is known as the torque hole. Ford wanted to find a way to fill this gap, so with some trick computer modeling and enough math to last a lifetime, the Blue Oval engineers created a system where the engine and transmission talk to each other and prepare for potential torque holes. Additional torque is supplied to fill the hole and the resulting shifts are more seamless to both driver and passengers.
If you want even more geeky details, click past the jump for Ford's complete release.

Shell chooses oil over whales, threatening Western Pacific Gray
Filed under: Green Daily, Pacific Region

"Pesky whales. They just have to have their feeding grounds right where we want to put another oil platform. Well, too bad for them."
That would seem to be the attitude over at the Sakhalin Energy Investment Company offices, of which Shell is the largest partner after Russia's Gazprom. The whales in question are of the critically endangered Western North Pacific gray variety, genetically distinct from the more prolific Eastern type. Thought to number just 130 individuals in all, the group's future is dependent on just 30 breeding females as well as the feeding grounds off of the Sakhalin Islands where they bulk up on crustaceans prior to traveling to their breeding area.
Unfortunately for the whales, those shallow waters are also the location Shell and its buddies want to build a new oil platform to complement two others in the area. This despite their own reports that state that the spot is not suitable, since the clay in the earthquake-prone seabed is unstable and the existing platforms preclude the need for a third (PDF).
A painful insult of seismic surveys will be conducted this summer to establish the exact coordinates for the injurious platform. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) will monitor the situation as it unfolds but it appears no one is able or willing to stop the construction plan. We look forward to the day when oil companies become extinct. (And yes, we know the quote in the picture should be attributed to a dolphin. Deal with it.)

API: U.S. petroleum deliveries rises 2.3% in 2010
Filed under: Etc.

The American Petroleum Institute reports that U.S. petroleum deliveries (a measure of overall demand) rose by 1.2 percent in December 2010, compared to the same month last year. Additionally, deliveries shot up by 2.3 percent for all of 2010, compared to 2009. Likewise, gasoline and diesel demand continue to rise, with gas deliveries up by 0.6 percent for the year and diesel climbing by 4.8 percent.
API chief economist John Felmy said in a statement that the culprit here is, well, Amazon.com (sort of). Felmy said:
Here's one last bit of info that hints that our demand for gas has yet to hit its peak: in 2010, U.S. refineries set a record for annual gasoline production. The robust distillate numbers suggest the nation's industrial sector continues to rebound. They were up both month over month and year over year. While consumer demand for gasoline was weak during this winter holiday season, higher prices and bad weather might have kept people off the roads. The other side of that is overall retail sales were up, led by a big 12-percent increase in e-commerce sales. People were doing more shopping online, and that, in turn, spurred more truck shipping and an increase in deliveries of ultra low sulfur diesel-a subset of total distillates and the kind of fuel the on-road trucks use-by more than 16 percent this December over last.

Video: BMW examining future of mobility in four-part documentary
Filed under: Transportation Alternatives, BMW

We've spent lifetimes obsessing over the next stage in the human transportation saga. Constantly unsatisfied with the humble car, we've looked ever onward toward rocket ships, jet packs and personal flying contraptions of varying design to take care of ferrying us to work in greater comfort and speed than ever before imagined. BMW seems to be willing to wade into that universe with its new four-part documentary on the future of mobility called Wherever You Want to Go. The film delves into the various forms of what we think of as futuristic transportation by speaking with everyone from Buzz Aldrin to Syd Meade, Robin Chase and Marissa Mayer. Most interestingly for people interested in more efficient transportation, the apparent last segment is all about hyper-efficient city mobility.
If you're thinking this all sounds like an automaker rallying the troops against the internal combustion engine, don't be so sure, since the short trailer features a ride in a Superbird clone. Hit the jump to soak up the trailer. BMW will release the films on February 1, 8, 15 and 22nd, so stay tuned, and we expect at least a little bit about the Megacity Vehicle we've heard so much about.

Ducati Confirms Major Changes To Desmosedici GP11
After Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden spoke to the press on Tuesday, Wednesday saw the turn of Ducati Corse boss Filippo Preziosi to talk to the press about the Desmosedici GP11 MotoGP bike, the influence that Rossi had had on the development direction, and the changes to be made. Summed up in a single word, those changes would best be described as radical: as reported yesterday, the new bike will have an altered forward subframe/airbox, modified triple clamps, revised swingarm and new 42mm forks, rather than the 48mm Ohlins used by all of the Ducatis (as well as the Yamahas and Hondas) except for Casey Stoner during 2010. The changes to the chassis are aimed at making the Desmosedici easier to turn, as well as providing improved feedback, and better feel for the rider, especially at extreme angles of lean.
More surprisingly, the engine has also undergone a major revision. The engine internals have been modified to provide a flatter torque curve, making for a bike that is easier to ride, with a less vicious power delivery. Ducati will be sticking with the Big Bang firing order, though Preziosi said they will retain the option to switch to the screamer at a later date. Electronics systems have also been altered, with Ducati working on anti-wheelie systems and on the traction control system.
