At the Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai announced that the Genesis Sedan, which will undergo a mid-cycle refresh before its 2012 model year launch, will be blessed with an all-new direct-injected 5.0-liter Tau V8 mill that cranks out 429 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. While the 5.0-liter is an impressive beast, Hyundai's Lambda direct-injected 3.8-liter V6, which is all-new for 2012 too, is no less deserving of recognition.
The addition of gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology has boosted output of Hyundai's all-new Lambda V6 by 15 percent compared to the automaker's current 3.8-liter mill. Horsepower has increased from 290 to 333 hp and peak torque has shot up from 264 pound-feet to 291 lb-ft. In addition, Hyundai's all-new Lambda V6 sports an 11.5:1 compressions ratio, which is up from the 10.4:1 ratio of the automaker's current 3.8-liter engine.
The Lambda's tweaks, along with numerous minor modifications, combine to boost the 2012 Genesis' fuel economy by more than seven percent compared to the 3.8-liter equipped 2011 model. As a result, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis, packaged with the all-new 3.8-liter GDI engine, scores 29 miles per gallon on the highway, up from the 27 mpg rating of the 2011 model.
