The first-generation Ford Fiesta entered Europe's automotive scene back in 1976. Since then, cumulative Fiesta sales have topped the 14-million mark, making the diminutive car the most successful European-made small vehicle ever sold on the continent, according to Ford.
Twenty eight months ago, the new Ford Fiesta launched in Europe. To date, sales of this model have exceeded a million units, making it the best-selling B-segment car in Europe and the UK over the past two-plus years.
Breaking down the numbers reveals that buyers in the UK have snatched up 239,742 Fiestas since the car's launch, with 76 percent of those vehicles being equipped with a gasoline engine and nearly 10 percent fitted with a slushbox. Almost three out of every four Fiestas sold in the UK are mid- or high-end models, with sales unequally split 30/70 between the three- and five-door versions, respectively. Oddly, the fuel-sipping, diesel-engined Fiesta has a take rate of only 24 percent.
