Official: New R8 Limited Edition celebrates 10 Le Mans victories for Audi
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Audi, UK, Luxury
Audi has worked up a special edition version of the company's R8 to commemorate the German automaker's victories at Le Mans. Powered by the same 430 horsepower, 4.2-liter V8 found in the base coupe, the R8 V8 Limited Edition models are available with special titanium-effect paint with titanium-toned wheels to match. Those rollers are 19-inch double Y-spoke bits that were crafted in the spitting image of the hardware found on the R8 GT Coupe. Buyers can also expect to find a set of red brake calipers tucked behind the wheels. All of the company's standard metallic and pearl effect paint options will also be available on the commemorative cars.
Inside, the R8 V8 Limited Edition comes with satellite navigation and Audi Music Interface with a Bang and Olufsen sound system as well as a unique interior lighting package and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Prices start at £93,935 in the UK. That figure translates to around $150,000 (including Britain's costly Value Added Tax), though there's no clear indication as to whether or not any of the 100 examples will make their way to the States or how much Audi will ask U.S. buyers to pay. Hit the jump for the press release.

Video: Greenpeace parodies Little Vader ad to show dark side of Volkswagen
Filed under: Etc., Green Culture, Volkswagen
Greenpeace has launched a parody of the Volkswagen Little Vader Super Bowl commercial. This time, the pint-sized Sith squares off against various heroes of the Rebel Alliance, including kid-form versions of Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Princess Leia and a Jedi Knight. There's even a tiny Lando Calrissian.
Why the neighborhood throw down? According to Greenpeace, Volkswagen is opposing European legislation that would impose further limits on the amount of C02 that new vehicles are allowed to emit. The video then draws an easy parallel between VW and the Evil Empire, complete with a looming VW-badged Death Star.
If you want to watch Episode II, you'll need to sign up on the Greenpeace website. The organization will e-mail the head honchos at Volkswagen on your behalf to decry their actions, so make sure you mean it. As of the time of writing, around 21,441 "rebels" have joined the cause to watch the second video. Hit the jump to check out Episode I for yourself, and head over to the Greenpeace site for more information.

Bruce Wayne to drive Lamborghini Aventador in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises
Filed under: Etc., Lamborghini, Celebrities
Bruce Wayne has lots of toys at his disposal. Billions of dollars and Lucius Fox mean a near unlimited supply of pure awesome. Still, Wayne can't play Batman during daylight hours, so his ride has to be a tad more subtle than The Tumbler. In Batman: The Dark Night, Bruce Wayne drove a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640, which he used to save someone else's life. We won't lie, that scene caused the room to get a little misty. Thankfully for Wayne, his billions allow a new bull to take the Murci's place, and a Lamborghini Aventador appears to be the ride of choice for Gotham's favorite playboy.
A member of the Luxury4Play.com forums obtained photos of the Gotham-plated Aventador on the set of the new film. The aggressive features of the Italian supercar are strong enough that the two-door could become a villain in its own right. Thankfully, the good guy holds the keys. We also get a shot of what is said to be Wayne's new pad, which can be seen in the gallery below.
Batman: The Dark Night is expected to zoom into theaters next summer, Lamborghini and all.

Honda's EV-neo electric scooter to make its European debut in July
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Honda, Europe/EU
While Honda's EV-neo has been available in Japan since last year, the rest of the world had to make do without them. That will change next month in Europe, as Honda will be unveiling the little electric in Barcelona. That's a good choice, considering 30 percent of all vehicles there are motorcycles. There will be a demonstration program in conjunction with the Barcelona City Council in which Honda will provide 18 EV-neos for a year.
The EV-neo comes equipped with a Toshiba SCiB lithium-ion battery pack (the same type that Mitsubishi is using for the i-MiEV). The battery is good for up to 18 miles of range and tops out at a scooter-like 30 miles per hour. The standard charger will fully charge a depleted pack in 3.5 hours, but an optional rapid charger can reduce that to 30 minutes. The base price for the EV-neo is expected to be 4,000 Euros ($5,750 U.S. at today's exchange rate).

Unlike gasoline-fueled vehicles, in which reverse gear only allows low-speed maneuvers, the Nissan Leaf packs an electric powertrain that, theoretically*, enables it to be driven backwards until it hits its top speed. This means that the Leaf, believe it or not, can whiz along in reverse at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. That's precisely why professional stunt driver, Terry Grant, will attempt to set a rather usual record from the drivers seat of a Leaf.
The record-setting attempt - up the famed Goodwood Hill - is set to take place on Fourth of July weekend at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The goal is for the Leaf to become the fastest vehicle to be driven up the hill climb course - backwards.
If you're thinking that Nissan will wheel out its Leaf Nismo RC for this challenging hill climb, you'd be wrong. Apparently, the production Leaf is an almost-ready-made hill-climbing machine and can tackle most any incline in reverse.
*Before reversing down the tarmac to see if the Leaf hits 90 mph, make sure to read Nissan's disclaimer: In normal circumstances an electronic feature stops the Leaf from reversing quickly. The only modification that has been made to this Leaf is the removal of this feature.

Colette edition makes Aston Martin Cygnet even more exclusive
Filed under: MPG, Aston Martin, Toyota
Bringing in fashion designers to outfit premium hatchbacks seems to be all the rage these days, whether it's a one-off like the latest Life Ball Mini, a Fiat 500 decked out by Diesel or any of the dozens of examples in between. Now, we've got one more to throw into the mix.
Teaming up with French fashion house Colette, the Aston Martin Works Tailored department has outfitted a limited run of 14 Cygnets with such special touches as a silver paint job with highlights, hand-crafted stainless steel badges and a chocolate brown interior with blue leather throw pillows (though what we'd need those for in the back of a city car is, of course, beyond us).
Just in case the limited availability weren't enough to keep this special edition exclusive, the €48,995 ($70,000 based on current exchange rates) price tag ought to do the trick. So if the Cygnet itself is already a gussied-up Toyota iQ, does this amount to gilding a lily or slapping lipstick on a pig? We'll let you decide from the full details in the press release after the jump and the images in the high-resolution gallery.

Boeing 747-8 completes historic biofuel-powered transatlantic flight
On June 20th, a Boeing 747-8 Freighter landed at Paris Le Bourget Airport, completing a historic biofuel-powered transatlantic flight. This marks the first time that a sizable commercial airplane crossed the Atlantic Ocean with all of its engines burning a somewhat sustainable aviation jet fuel.
The unmodified Boeing 747-8, piloted by captains Keith Otsuka, Rick Braun and Sten Rossby, flew from Everett, WA to Le Bourget with all four of its General Electric GEnx-2B engines powered by a blend of 15 percent camelina-based biofuel mixed in with 85 percent traditional kerosene Jet A fuel.
This particular 747-8 was the fourth of five Boeing commercial jets to arrive at the Paris Air Show and was displayed June 21 and 22. After the show, the 747-8 was handed over to Cargolux - one of the world's leading cargo transport airlines.

Is this the 2013 Cadillac ATS?
Filed under: Sedan, Etc., Cadillac, Rumormill, Luxury
The keen-eyed crew over at GMInsideNews may have snagged the best view yet of the upcoming Cadillac ATS chassis. Board member Elvisuperman snapped a screen capture of the introduction video at GM.com, which seems to show an engineer hard at work on what might be the Alpha platform. The bare shell is a four-door sedan with short overhangs, what looks to have a rear-wheel drive configuration and rear flanks that don't match anything else in the General Motors stable at the moment. So, could this be the bones of the company's 3 Series fighter?
It's hard telling. We wouldn't think that the people at GM would be so absent-minded as to slather the chassis of one of the most anticipated vehicles from Cadillac all over the main page, but stranger things have happened.
Word on the web is that the ATS (real name to come) will pack a turbocharged V6 engine when it lands on dealer lots, though GM has yet to announce any powertrain options. Stay tuned, and head over to GM.com to see the video for yourself.

Size matters! U.S. consumers prefer compacts over subcompacts
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, MPG, Lightweight, USA
With gas prices on the rise, U.S. consumers are turning to fuel-efficient compact vehicles, according to a study conducted by GfK Automotive. Surprisingly, demand for subcompact vehicles has remained relatively low despite an uptick in pump prices.
According to GfK Automotive, compact vehicles accounted for 18.1 percent of what it refers to as "six-month demand" in May of 2011. That compares to just 3.6 percent for subcompact vehicles. GfK Automotive found that there's a strong correlation between surges in gas prices and increased demand for subcompact and compact vehicles. However, when given the choice between a subcompact with a fuel economy rating of 40 miles per gallon highway and a compact that returns identical numbers, U.S. consumers strongly favor the roomier vehicle.
Doug Scott, senior vice president of consulting at GfK Automotive, says that:
Guess sometimes size does matter! While consumers are looking at smaller vehicles due to high gas prices, they aren't willing to go all the way down to a subcompact car. Consumers are discovering that newer compact cars offer the comfort features before only reserved to larger cars, combined with the fuel economy that was only available in much smaller cars.

Want to idle your big truck in California? You'll need a sticker
Filed under: Legislation and Policy
Way back in 2008, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) decided to make it illegal to idle diesel-engined trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds for more than five minutes. That GVWR is above that of most heavy-duty pickups like the Dodge Ram 3500, Ford F-350 and GMC Sierra 3500, but does cover most chassis-cab trucks.
CARB's regulation says that manufacturers of diesel engines have to either incorporate an anti-idling system or to certify that the engine emits 30 grams or fewer of nitrogen oxide per hour in order to get a sticker. If the oil-burning engine meets that limit, it can, at least in theory, idle forever.
For 2011, the Ram 4500/5500 and Ford F-450/F-550 chassis-cab trucks meet CARB's certified clean idle requirements, meaning that they get one them flashy stickers (pictured). Being able to idle indefinitely isn't really sticker-worthy, right?

ZF dishes out details on its fuel-saving 9-speed auto transmission
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, MPG
During the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, ZF announced that is was forging forward with plans to develop a nine-speed automatic transmission and the gearbox specialist is now ready to dish out some details. ZF claims that the 9HP transmission has been designed exclusively for front-wheel-drive vehicles with transversely mounted engines. The tranny will reportedly be able to bolt into hybrid vehicles and is designed as a "construction kit," meaning that an additional transfer case could be added for all-wheel-drive. The 9HP is also stop-start capable.
More importantly, the 9HP was developed to assist automakers in boosting their vehicles' fuel economy ratings. ZF says that the transmission will cut fuel consumption by up to 16 percent versus vehicles equipped with six-speed autos. ZF claims that the fuel-saving tranny allows most engines to spin at 1,900 RPM, compared to 2,600 RPM in a typical six-speed-equipped automobile.
ZF has yet to release a rollout schedule detailing when the nine-speed transmission will make its first appearance in a production vehicle, but we're guessing it will be soon. Hit the jump to read all the details on ZF's 9HP trans.
