Report: With blankets in cold weather, Nissan Leaf taxi experiment not working in Osaka

There are quite a few taxi operators testing out electric cars by adding Nissan Leaf EVs to their fleets - whether that be New York (pictured), Hong Kong or Mexico City. It's a channel for the global automaker to sell more of the cars and give more people their own experience of being transported in a Leaf. But there can be a downside.

The experiment hasn't gone well in Osaka, Japan, where many cab owners and drivers can't wait to drive a non-Leaf taxi. In February 2011, the city made a deal with Nissan and 30 taxi firms to bring in 50 Nissan Leaf taxis. The Leafs were subsidized with incentives from the city and the national government that brought the price down to 1,780,000 yen (about $21,000 US) for the taxi firms.

Taxi drivers liked the Leafs at first. One taxi driver loved the Leaf and told Japan Today: "There's no vibration or knocks from the engine. They just glide smoothly. The electric power is far cheaper than outlays for gasoline, and there are few mechanical failures. Eventually we're certain that EV taxis will become the most common type on the road."

The driver's prediction was way off the mark. The Leafs are being utilized only about half as much as regular taxis in Osaka. The problem started right after the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown, right after the Leafs were delivered to the taxi fleets. Electricity had been an appealing alternative to gasoline for taxis as a clean, safe, and non-polluting source of energy. The positive image faded as electricity became scarce and the source of the power was called into question.

The cars themselves became another problem for taxi drivers - more specifically, the battery pack performance declined. "When the cars were new, you could drive about 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) on a full charge; but after two years of use, their maximum range is down to about one half of that. So you have to refuse passengers who request long trips," a taxi driver said.

On cold days, some taxi drivers even shun the heater and offer passengers chemical pocket warmers and blankets.

Charging has brought another wall to climb. Taxi drivers had been able to charge in about 15 minutes, but, recently, it has been taking 40 minutes or more. There are only eight charging stations in Osaka, and driving around to find them takes time out of finding potential rides. The problem gets worse on cold-weather days, when using the heater consumers more electricity - some drivers even shun the heater and offer passengers chemical pocket warmers and blankets. It's become a money-losing proposition for taxi drivers and owners.

That's no ordinary New York City yellow taxi in the image above; it's a police cruiser for the New York City Police Department dressed up like an NYC yellow taxi. Captured in a short video on a Manhattan street corner, it is escorting an NYPD van behind it.

They don't just use Crown Vics, either: NYC The Blog has video from two years ago of a motorist being pulled over by a Nissan Altima taxi. The blog also lets you know how to tell an undercover police cab from a proper taxi by comparing the license plate number to the medallion number on the cab's roof - not that it would do you any good in your rearview mirror, though.

When the post was written two and a half years ago it was said that there were only eight such taxis prowling the naked city, and that their plates all began with "T800." That's not the case with the taxi in the video below, so we wouldn't be surprised if the number has grown and now there are even more people in more places keeping an eye on you.

Followup: Fisker reportedly drops $33MM lawsuit over Sandy damaged cars

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy hitting the east coast, Fisker Automotive and insurer XL Insurance wound up in a legal battle over 338 Karma models destroyed in the storm. The cars were sitting in Port Newark, New Jersey when the enormous storm struck, washing away $33 million worth of viable automobiles. Fisker sued XL Insurance in New York State Supreme Court after the company denied coverage for the loss.

Both sides reportedly reached an agreement to drop the legal action on Thursday without publicly stating a reason for the truce. In lieu of an actual reason, here's some conjecture: the cars may be worth more to Fisker as an uncompensated loss, as pending legal battles make the beleaguered niche automaker much less attractive to potential investors or suitors.

Read This: Forbes columnist says Tesla EVs are 'niche' vehicles, just like most cars

Did Forbes just publish an article defending a plug-in vehicle? Sure did, when one of the publication's columnists offered a counterpoint to that famous piece in The New York Times that criticized the Tesla Model S for less-than-advertised driving range.

Forbes contributor Mark Rogowsky took issue with the Times' statement that the Teslas are "nothing more than niche vehicles," by pointing out that no vehicle can be all things to all people. For example, on the concept of range anxiety, the columnist cites a Department of Transportation statistic that says that 97 percent of vehicle trips are less than 50 miles, or far less than the Model S's single-charge range. Using his own SUV as an example, Rogowsky notes that his car serves most purposes fairly well but falls short when compared to the fuel economy of a Toyota Prius or when tasked to carry larger loads.

Over the years, Forbes hasn't exactly been a bastion of plug-in vehicle advocacy. One Forbes article last year accused General Motors of inflating sales numbers for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in by leasing them out at artificially low prices, to cite just one example.

Either way, the Model S has been the subject of some bad blood between The New York Times. Earlier this week, the Times' public editor Margaret Sullivan said NYT writer John Broder wrote the story "in good faith" but wasn't precise enough in recording the details of his experience.

For a while there, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was having a kumbaya moment after the public editor The New York Times, Margaret Sullivan, wrote that her publication may have been overzealous in its criticism of the Tesla Model S and admitted that Times reporter John Broder was not entirely precise with his mileage or speed logs.

Musk, writing on the official Tesla blog post, thanked Sullivan and the Times for the response and also singled out CNN, CNBC and Consumer Reports for duplicating Broder's test (without running dry, of course). Musk also sent a shout out to Tesla owners who wrote the Times to tell the publication it may have been off base with its findings. The Tesla chief also used the post to pitch the fact that Tesla's installing more fast chargers along the East Coast and improving the model's software.

That was on the blog. On Twitter, thing have been a bit more heated. The New York Times automotive editor, James Cobb, wrote a series of tweets to Elon, which we get into below.

For all the advantages public transportation offers, relying on your local bus is typically about as entertaining as taking in someone's lint collection. Telecommunications giant Qualcomm set out to remedy that scenario at one stop by switching out the bus schedule on the wall for a URL. Visitors were encouraged to participate and immediately got more than they bargained for. One would-be bus rider got a trip in a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, and that was probably the most predictable result.

We would like to think we'd be more prone to embracing public transportation if it came with this level of entertainment. You'll have to watch the video below to see more about what we mean.

2013 Phillip Island World Superbike QP2 Results: Fabrizio Continues To Dominate

Leon Camier was the first rider to get a lap under 1'31, even though his Suzuki was slower in a straight line than his team-mate's, but his top spot was toppled four minutes from the end by this weekend's fast man Michel Fabrizio on a privateer Aprilia.

Tom Sykes, a man who has been absent from the sharpest end thus far, made an appearance in provisional third place, showing that it'll take more than a fractured wrist to slow him down. The factory Aprilias of Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli were split by Marco Melandri, all three of whom were under 1'31 by the end of the session. 

Two Australian wildcards, Jamie Stauffer and Glen Allerton, qualified in the top 16, earling them places in this afternoon's Superpole session.

Ayrton Badovini was unable to start as his crash yesterday left him with a broken foot, ruling him out for the rest of the weekend.
