Going into the summer break, the ever industrious Repsol Media service have issued a press release containing an interview with Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, in which the Spaniard looks back over the season so far. In the interview, Pedrosa also discusses how the 1000s have affected the racing, what it takes to win a race this year, what influence the tires have had and the prospect of sharing a garage with Marc Marquez.
Read the interview in full below:
“This year we are all at the limit of our possibilities”
Dani Pedrosa, satisfied with the first half of 2012 and eager to continue pushing for the title in MotoGP’s extremely tight battle for supremacy.
Repsol Media Service - Tuesday 31/07/2012
The Spanish rider for the Repsol Honda Team has been at his most consistent so far this season, stepping onto the podium at nine of the ten races contested to date and taking victory at the German Grand Prix. Second in the standings, Pedrosa will rest up during the two-week summer break and think about the remaining eight Grands Prix that will decide the MotoGP World Championship for 2012. He remains one of the strongest candidates for the title.

2012 Laguna Seca MotoGP FP1 Result: Pedrosa Edges Lorenzo
Dani Pedrosa has got off to a flying start at Laguna Seca, leading from early in the session and ending FP1 just ahead of Jorge Lorenzo. The Repsol Honda man was quick from the off, closing in on the race lap record as the session drew to a close. Jorge Lorenzo took the lead for part of the session, but at the end, the Factory Yamaha rider had to concede to Pedrosa, the Repsol Honda man gaining most of his advantage in the final section of the track, from the bottom of the Corkscrew back across the line.
Pedrosa's Repsol teammate Casey Stoner ended the session in 3rd, unhappy with the fact that he was four tenths behind his teammate, while Ben Spies finished in 4th, half a second behind Pedrosa and with the potential to have been a little faster, if he hadn't run across Toni Elias on his final lap.

Official: GM developing Wi-Fi app to help pedestrians avoid being hit [w/video]
Since even the threat of serious injury or death isn't enough to keep people engrossed in their phones from walking out into traffic, General Motors is developing a new pedestrian safety technology that will sense the phone itself. Using Wi-Fi Direct, a peer-to-peer wireless standard that's like a medium-range Bluetooth, a car would be able to detect a smartphone directly and alert the driver in time to avoid kneecapping the pedestrian.
GM says that Wi-Fi Direct would allow devices to connect in one second, rather than the seven to eight that devices would need when connecting through a cell tower. While GM is still developing the concept, it also has plans for a smartphone app that would warn approaching vehicles. It could be used by bike messengers, construction workers, and others who are frequently at risk of being hit by traffic.
Scroll down to read the full press release and watch a video explaining the concept.

Report: Ecclestone may buy Nürburgring outright
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe
Bernie Ecclestone was apparently quite serious when he said he would "do everything" to save the troubled Nürburgring. In fact, according to a new report from Bloomberg Businessweek, the megalomaniacal Formula One boss might just buy the track outright. That'd certainly be a quick answer to the 'Ring's financial troubles.
That said, Bloomberg reports that Ecclestone has no plans to organize a Formula One race on the Nürburgring at his own expense. Furthermore, Ecclestone has declined to comment on pricing or conditions for the alleged agreement.
The Nürburgring's severe debt crisis is hardly news - the legendary track has been going through hard times for a while now, despite efforts to boost revenue by building a roller coaster and shopping mall on the premises. The European Union has refused to bail out the ailing track, as well, specifically because it has bigger fish to fry at the moment (you know, like the declining economies of many of its countries).
A timetable for a potential sale of the Nürburgring to Ecclestone has not been disclosed.

Video: This is what a six-rotor Wankel looks and sounds like
Filed under: Performance, Technology, Videos, Australia
Ah, the Wankel. You magnificent, high-reving feat of unorthodox engineering. Your biggest champion, Mazda, may have left you - at least for the moment - but that doesn't mean some mad mechanics can't rally you and a few friends for a high-horsepower party.
The folks over at Pulse Performance Race Engineering of New Zealand have constructed an engine made from six, count 'em, six Wankel rotors. The mere fact that this engine starts and runs is a testament to the mechanical know-how of these guys. For comparison's sake, Mazda's own Le Mans-winning 787 prototype utilized a four-rotor Wankel. Another four-rotor was constructed by BMI Racing's "Mad Mike," whose engines are worked on by Pulse Performance.
Scroll below to see the video and hear it for yourself. The engine's sound is not what you would expect from a rotary, and if we're being honest we don't find it terribly pleasant to listen to, but it's still an awfully impressive feat of engineering. We're not sure what kind of vehicle this insane powerplant will grace (we're guessing a drag car), but whatever it is, it figures to be one-of-a-kind.

Nicky Hayden To Stay With Ducati MotoGP Team For 2013
Nicky Hayden will be staying with Ducati in MotoGP for the 2013 season. Ducati Corse today issued an official press release announcing Hayden's contract extension for another year.
Hayden's continuation at Ducati had been in doubt for over a month, with the news that Ducati was in talks with Cal Crutchlow for next season emerging after Silverstone. Since then, internal discussion - and the support of Ducati CEO Gabriele Del Torchio - has swung back in Hayden's favor, seeing the Kentuckian offered a new contract for next year. Hayden's popularity around the globe, and most especially, his importance to the key US market was a major factor in the decision to extend Hayden's contract. Stability in the team also played a role; with a strong chance that Valentino Rossi could leave the team at the end of this season, starting 2013 with two new riders was felt to be too great a risk. By securing Hayden's services for next year, some continuity in bike development is ensured.
With Hayden now signed, all eyes are on his teammate Valentino Rossi. Rossi is due to make a decision on whether to stay with Ducati or move back to Yamaha in the short summer break between Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. There are no clear signs of what that decision will be as yet. Ducati, like the rest of the world, will have to sit and wait.

DOE funds 13 biofuel projects with $41 million
Filed under: Biodiesel, Ethanol, Legislation and Policy, USA
The U.S. Department of Energy has got its fingers in a lot of alternative-energy pies, from hydrogen vehicles to plug-ins. Today, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the DOE has announced that it will reach a little deeper into 13 biofuel and feedstock improvement projects with a $41 million investment. We hope there are gloves involved in the "manure to ethanol" project.
The details of the projects can be found in the press release below, but there are five that will "diversify the nation's energy portfolio and replace the need for gasoline and diesel in vehicles" and eight that use "biomass genomics to improve promising biofuel feedstocks and drive more efficient, cost-effective energy production."
The five vehicle-specific projects include: $4.25 million for the Quad County Corn Cooperative in Iowa to improve a corn starch ethanol plant; $7 million for the Agricultural Research Service's National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Illinois to create better "rapeseed/canola, mustard and camelina oilseed crops" to make diesel and jet fuel; $6.85 million for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in Ohio for better rubber plants so they make rubber as well as byproducts to maybe be used "in biopower and for conversion to jet fuel precursors;" $7 million for the University of Wisconsin to turn dairy manure into ethanol and other products; and $6 million to the University of Hawaii to grow local grasses so they can more easily be used to make jet fuel and diesel.
That's all pretty heady stuff, but a new video called Biofuels 101 shows that the Energy Department can also make this stuff easy to understand. Watch it below.

Toni Elias To Replace Hector Barbera At Laguna Seca
Toni Elias has been drafted in to replace the injured Hector Barbera at Laguna Seca. The Spaniard had recently parted ways with the Aspar team in Moto2, meaning he was immediately available to take the ride, and given Elias' prior experience with the team - Elias rode for the squad back in 2008 - and with the Bridgestone tires, Elias was the obvious candidate.
The Pramac team had a prior agreement with Kenny Noyes, the former Moto2 rider currently contesting the Spanish Moto2 championship, as permanent replacement rider. In the end, the American lost out to Elias on the basis of the Spaniard's previous experience with both the Bridgestone tires and the Ducati Desmosedici. Despite Elias' obvious struggles with the Bridgestone tires last season, both Ducati and Pramac must be hoping that the new, softer construction Bridgestones will be kinder to Elias' style than their 2011 predecessors. More importantly, perhaps, Elias' experience with the bike and the tires makes him less likely to crash expensively at the tricky Laguna Seca circuit.

Report: Carroll Shelby's wife, family finally agree to burial
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Celebrities
The Detroit News reports Carroll Shelby will finally be buried some two months after his death. Two factions of the legendary designer's family have finally settled on what do with his remains.
One one side, Shelby's children claimed he wanted his remains cremated and divided between them and a plot in Texas. His surviving wife, Cleo Shelby, said the document detailing those wishes was a forgery, and that Carroll Shelby had actually signed different paperwork two years ago giving her control over his remains. The two parties lawyered up, but earlier this week said that they were close to reaching a settlement that would prevent a civil trial.
The agreement will see Shelby cremated and his ashes split five ways, with the final portion going to his wife. Shelby's oldest son, Michael, says he and his siblings aren't happy with the arrangement, but are eager to finally bury their father.
We just hope we die long before we're famous.
