2010 Paris Auto Show: Toyota FT-CH Compact Hybrid [Live Photos]

The Japanese presence at the Paris Auto Show is being spearheaded by Toyota's most exciting hybrid, the FT-CH Compact. Presented for the first time at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), the car has now traveled to Europe to impress the customers here as well.

Since the Prius is some type of guide line for all hybrids out there, we have no way not to compare this new concept with the decade old hybrid. 22 inches shorter than the Prius, the FT-CH is sized right to be nimble, r...

Report: Volkswagen joining NASCAR rumors begin to swirl again

First Toyota, now Volkswagen? According to the boys from Motor Trend, VeeDub is seriously considering entering into the bastion of American motorsport. That's right, NASCAR. While rumors of VW fielding a Formula 1 team have swirled for quite some time, this is the second time we've heard that the German automaker is considering American stock cars and oval tracks.

What may be prompting this apparent interest in NASCAR? As we all know, Volkswagen has its sights set on becoming a much larger player in the American market, going so far as to create a New Midsize Sedan specifically for the States that will be built by U.S. workers in Tennessee. Not exactly Carolina, the hub of NASCAR development, but close enough.

And it's this upcoming New Midsize Sedan (unnamed as of yet) that would be doing oval duty against the likes of Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and the previously mentioned Toyota. If the rumors are to be believed, VW will begin talks with NASCAR officials and Roger Penske, who fields one of the more successful teams in the sport, in November after the current season concludes.

Lexus IS coupe could come as early as 2012

The Lexus GS is set to get a comprehensive redesign sometime next year, including thoroughly upgraded underpinnings that will for the basis of Lexus' next generation 5 Series fighter. Like the current GS platform, the new architecture will form the basis of the next IS, which in its current form is essentially a shortened and squished GS.

With that in mind, the next generation IS will follow shortly thereafter - likely sometime in 2012 - and in addition to the current sedan and convertible, Lexus could finally add an IS coupe to its lineup. Lexus recognizes that it hasn't had a credible player in that market for far too long, and with the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe around the corner and the two-door BMW 3 Series holding its own, the obvious question is why hasn't Lexus done it sooner?

According to our sources, it was easier for Toyota to make a business case for the IS cabrio, particularly given the SC430's imminent demise and Lexus' need for a drop-top offering to fill the hole. If the coupe does come to fruition - and we've been told in no uncertain terms that it's in the cards - expect the two-door IS to bow sometime in late 2012 or early 2013. And it's safe to assume an F version will arrive with in year of the coupe's debut.

Paris 2010: Peugeot 508 is a glimpse of things to come

Peugeot is celebrating its 200th birthday (as a company), and to mark the occasion, the French automaker is planning an all-out product offensive. Chief among them is the mighty 508 - a sedan that benefits from reduced weight and increased interior room compared to the old 407. In a word: Progress.

Initially, the company says that the 508 will be available with everything from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 120 horsepower and 118 pound-torque of torque to a 150-hp 2.2-liter turbo-diesel engine with a gobsmacking 331 pound-feet of torque. Available gearboxes vary from a six-speed automatic to both five- and six-speed manuals. Peugeot also plans to roll out a hybrid version of the big sedan, though the company says that European buyers can expect to wait a little while on that one. Interestingly, Pug officials say when the 508 does get its batteries, the hybrid will pack a 200-hp diesel engine in addition to whatever the electric motors add.

Chevy Volt Unplugged

About two more months are left until the Chevrolet Volt hits the limited number of regions in which it will be at first offered, but this does not stop American manufacturer GM from advertising some more one of its biggest gambles in years.

Survey: Consumers find proposed new fuel economy labels confusing

EPA fuel economy labels
EPA/DOT Proposed Fuel Economy Labels - Click above for high-res versions

It's always a tough road to hoe when it comes time to make wholesale changes to something consumers know and are comfortable with - just ask Car and Driver. But, progress is progress, and sometimes a redesign is necessary in order to keep pace with the times.

Such is the case with today's fuel economy labels. Although we all understand what miles per gallon means (well, mostly...) and what kind of figures we should expect from a given type of vehicle, the future has plenty in store that will drastically change all of that; namely, electric cars and plug-in hybrids. That being the case, the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation were charged with designing completely revised fuel economy labels for new vehicles at the dealership.

Judging by the response from our earlier article on the subject, consumers are split on the new stickers' effectiveness. A new study from Siegel+Gale seems to confirm this suspicion. The full details can be found in the press release after the break and from this PDF, but the gist is as follows:

Two-thirds of respondents preferred the horizontal option over the vertical option (see here), but 38-percent still found something confusing about the winning label. A resounding 86 percent said that miles per gallon was the most important figure, while 68 percent cared most about greenhouse gas emissions.

As for us, we're thinking that much of the problem lies with the fact that the public at large still doesn't understand electric vehicles and, more specifically, extended-range electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Many of the features consumers say they could do without were added to the labels in an attempt to give an accurate representation of electric vehicle mileage benefits.

LaHood Slams IIHS Distracted Driving Report

On Wednesday, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) published a study about the laws against texting while driving and the effects, or at least the lack of, these laws have had since their implementation.

The IIHS claims that since the adoption of laws banning texting, the number of car crashes has not decreased but on the contrary, went up a percentage point or two. Although the Institute did not claim, as far as we can tell, that the laws and regulations themselves (in fact, the...

WSBK Silly Season Latest - Haslam Confirmed With BMW, Checa Stays With Althea, Haga On An Aprilia

After lying dormant for much of the summer, the World Superbike Silly Season has suddenly been kicked into top gear at Imola, with a spate of contract signings and rumors emerging from the WSBK paddock over the weekend. At the heart of the various moves and switches has been the fate of the Alstare Suzuki team. Doubts have hung over the future of the team for some time now, with Suzuki apparently unwilling to continue to back the team at their current level. After a meeting last week in Japan, Alstare team boss Francis Batta came away with more questions than answers. "Even though I didn't receive any concrete guarantees, I'm still encouraged that Suzuki showed some attachment to the team," Batta told GPone.com's Claudio Porrozzi. Suzuki is likely to have the budget to run just a single rider next season, though the level of support available from Hamamatsu is uncertain.
