Renault-Nissan has inked a definitive deal aimed at promoting the adoption and use of electric vehicles (EVs) with the city of Amsterdam. The Alliance will work with the city to reach the target of delivering at least 1,000 EVs there by the end of 2011. Here's how the Alliance aims to land its EVs in Amsterdam: first, Nissan will ship out 100 Leafs to fleet customers by February 2011. Four months later, the public will get its first shot at buying the Leaf. Shortly thereafter, Renault will step in by delivering both the Fluence Z.E. and Kangoo Express Z.E. to fleet and individual customers.
Renault and Nissan will supply the vehicles, but its up to the city of Amsterdam to prepare the infrastructure in time for arrival. Amsterdam will install up to 2,000 Level 2 charging stations, including one quick charge unit, at streetside locations and area parking lots. The chargers will be financed by the Air Quality Fund and the local government. The Alliance will work hand-in-hand with the city to run an Electric Mobility Education Program aimed at promoting "zero-emissions" travel and hopes to further promote EVs by establishing a regional sales and service network.
